BIG V SEASON 2009 WEEKLY REVIEW:

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN

GAME OF THE ROUND

Geelong Cats 67 dft Eltham Wildcats 48

It was the 45 Eltham turnovers which saw Geelong take a comfortable 19-point victory on Sunday and catapult them into the winners circle. It was a team effort – with everyone of the Cats’ 10 players making a contribution to the score line - which prompted the win. Geelong coach Darren Busuttil said although the match was somewhat untidy, he was extremely happy with the win. The Wildcats’ held a four-point win at quarter time, but the home side stepped up the defensive pressure in the second term and continued to build on their momentum to round out the game victors. Vicki Mallon headlined with Geelong outfit with 11 points and six steals, with Sarah De Grandi and Lauren Bellegante snatching 10 points apiece. Jess Kelly was the high-scorer for Eltham with 10 points, whilst Marie Donohue hit nine points and grabbed eight boards.

Game MVP: Vicki Mallon (Geelong Cats)

Diamond Valley cruised to victory on Saturday night against Geelong. Laura Janes was also a force, hitting 13 points and snaring 10 boards. Diamond Valley coach Peter Gay said it was encouraging to get their first win at home. “It was physical scrappy and intense, but it was a nice win at home,” Gay said.
