DIVISION ONE MEN

GAME OF THE ROUND

Werribee Devils 107 dft. Geelong Cats 87

This week’s game of the round saw two teams trying to keep their perfect record intact, as the Geelong Cats made the trek to Werribee. With a strong finish to the contest, the Devils were able to continue the form they showed against Coburg the previous week, and hold on for a hard fought home victory.  Geelong came out firing in the opening term, and took a narrow lead into the first break. They added to their lead in the second quarter, shooting 50 per cent from the field. Werribee’s shot’s were not falling, and the Cats took a 48-44 lead at the half.

Werribee picked it up in the second half, outscoring Geelong 28-21 in the third quarter. The Devils steamrolled from there, hitting 15 field goals in the last quarter, leading to 35 points. Eight steals in the final period contributed to the Cats demise, forcing them into 11 turnovers. Once again for the Devils, the shooting and work on the glass from Aaron and Nathan Marsh was impressive. Nathan finishing with 17 points, 14 rebounds, while Aaron took an amazing 27 shot attempts, and ended with a stat line of 34 points, 17 rebounds, six assists.  While for the Cats, 23 points from Keith Harrison were somewhat soured by his 11 turnovers, and JJ Paton scored 20 points. Both teams were playing in the first of a weekend double header, with the Cats hoping they can claw out a victory to end the round 1-1 on Sunday.

Game MVP: Aaron Marsh (Werribee Devils)

Coburg Giants 98 dft. Geelong Cats 97

After a close loss to Werribee in round one, the Coburg Giants were hoping to get a win on the board, and quickly, as they headed to Geelong for their Sunday fixture. Geelong was also coming off a loss to the Devils, one suffered the night before.  Coburg took the lead heading into the first break 29-21, and although the Cats did not seem fatigued from their encounter the night before, they couldn’t close the gap in the second term, and went into the halftime break trailing 49-61. The third term saw a fired up home team, as Geelong put up 30 points to drag the margin all the way back to a single point. The Giants looked like they would be overrun in the last quarter, but a gutsy performance, and deadly accurate shooting saw them stand tall, and prevail by the slimmest of margins.  Madbuk Mahommed contributed 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Giants, while guard Brian O’Meara top scored with 24 points, to go along with five steals. Keith Harrison again led the Cats in scoring, while Chris Brown continued to stuff the stat sheet.

Game MVP: Brian O’Meara (Coburg Giants)
