Big V Geelong Review (Round 3)
BIG V SEASON 2009 WEEKLY REVIEW:
DIVISION ONE MEN
Southern Peninsula 92 lost to Geelong Cats 100
Hoping to continue their form from the previous round, the Southern Peninsula Sharks played host to the Geelong Cats. Coming off a horror weekend last week, the Cats were hoping to get back on the winners list, and came up with the terrific road win.
After an even start to the game, the Sharks skipped away to ten point halftime lead, 50-40. Things turned in the third quarter as the road team Cats scored 31 points for the term, and the game was set up for a thrilling last quarter. Geelong was again outstanding
in the last, while the Sharks could only score 19 points on 23 per cent shooting. Another high scoring Geelong quarter gave them a great road win.
Carl Arts led the Sharks on the scoreboard with 30 points and 21 rebounds before fouling out, while Kyle Reid and Matthew Wilmott battled hard. For Geelong, six players scored in double figures, Greg Smith and Steven Wiasak each score 20 points, while Chris Brown pulled down 16 boards.
Game MVP: Carl Artz (Southern Peninsula Sharks)

YOUTH LEAGUE MEN DIVISION TWO
Geelong Cats 80 dft. By Chelsea Gulls 82
With game breaker Steven Wiasak on the other side of Port Phillip Bay playing Division One, the Chelsea Gulls seized the opportunity to record their first win of the season on their longest road trip. It was a scrappy, low scoring encounter but Chelsea held out in a tense last quarter.
The score line was close at every change and it took all 48 minutes to decide the winner, small advantages in rebounds and shooting for The Cats were cancelled out by a slightly inflated turnover count.
The Gulls can thank strong performances from Daniel Anthony, Allen Brunsting and Michael Warring, as they open their 2009 account. The Cats missed Wiasak, however Ben Scannell and Nathan Moore were both effective in a game where very little separated the teams. Enough though, for the Gulls to claim one of the upsets of the season to date.
Game MVP: Not Available
Geelong Cats 99 dft. Werribee Devils 92
The Cats take the honours in this early season miniseries three wins to zero as they registered a seven point victory here. The Devils looked the goods early however the Cats showed no signs of fatigue from the night before as Simon Evans shot them into the lead and all the way to the win.
The sharpshooter hit eight three-pointers from 13 attempts in his game high 28 points. Evans was supported by Steven Wiasak, who made a welcome return to the Youth League side with another double-double.
The Devils worked hard but remain winless in 2009, they will look forward to Thursday night were they can try to enter the Easter break on a win against Altona.
Game MVP: Andrew Olechnowicz (Werribee)
