Big V Geelong Preview (Round 5)
Geelong Lady Cats (1-4)
Big V State Championship
vs. Hume City (4-0) @ Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium, Saturday 7.00pm
A baptism of fire for new American-recruit Audrey Muse, with the Lady Cats making the trek to Broadmeadows to face reigning champions Hume City. Muse will provide Geelong with some much-needed scoring punch however the undefeated Broncos depth will test the Lady Cats. Former Australian representative Katrina Hibbert (16.5ppg, 7rpg) and WNBL star Sharin Milner (11.5ppg, 4.5apg) will have to be contained if Geelong is to cause an upset. ItâÂÂll be a reunion of sorts on Sunday with three former Lady Cats- Lauren Bennett, Ana Marinovic and Lisa Troyahn- all now on the Broncos roster.
Geelong Cats (2-3)
Big V Division One
vs. Whittlesea (2-3) @ Mill Park Basketball Stadium, Saturday 8.00pm
vs. Altona (2-3) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 3.00pm
ItâÂÂs a crucial double header for the Cats as they play teams with similar records. Coach Greg Smith will expect nothing less than two wins. Star shooter Keith Harrison returns to the squad after missing the one point loss to Sunbury in last weekâÂÂs grand final re-match.
Both Whittlesea and Altona are coming off wins, however they were both against lower ranked opposition, while the Cats loss came against a team that remains unbeaten through the opening month of the season. Coach Smith will look to big man trio Seb Loader, Chris Brown and Marty DeLange to dominate in the paint.
Geelong Cats (5-2)
Big V Youth League Two
vs. Chelsea (1-4) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 1.00pm
After a tough start to the season in which the Youth League Cats played seven matches in the opening four weekends, it gets a bit easier for Dave BrownâÂÂs squad who now play one game a weekend until the final round of the season. Despite the discrepancy in the Cats and ChelseaâÂÂs win-loss record, the Gulls only win of the season came against Geelong in round three on The Arena Showcourt. The Cats are again likely to be without guard Ben Scannell (ankle), but with plenty of scoring threats, including Steve Wiasak, Simon Evans, James Swallow and Michael Rebula, should have too much firepower for Chelsea.
