Big V Geelong Preview (Round 6)

Keith Harrison

Geelong Lady Cats (1-4)

Big V State Championship

vs. Melbourne (3-3) @ The Arena Annexe, Saturday 7.30pm

vs. Eltham (0-6) @ Templestowe Leisure Centre, Sunday 1.00pm

An important weekend for the Lady Cats if they are to stay in touch with the top four, with coach Darren Busuttil expecting nothing less than two wins. Melbourne hammered Geelong 85-47 when they met in the opening round. Ironically that was the scoreline the Lady Cats were on the end of in their loss to Hume City on ANZAC Day. After a solid debut of 13 points and 12 rebounds, American Audrey Muse will get to show her wares at The Arena Annexe for the first time. Sunday’s trip to Eltham should bring Geelong’s second win of the season. In their first meeting this season the Lady Cats disposed of the Wildcats 67-48.

Geelong Cats (3-4)

Big V Division One

vs. Warrnambool (2-5) @ Warrnambool Basketball Stadium, Saturday 8.00pm

Saturday marks the first trip to Warrnambool for a senior men’s Geelong basketball team since the Cats and the Seahawks were in Big V Championship in 2002. It’s must win for Geelong who will be without shooting guard Keith Harrison for at least six weeks with a dislocated ankle. Veteran Paul Hutchison returned to some of his best form last weekend with hauls of 31 and 23 against Whittlesea and Altona respectively, and coach Greg Smith will again expect his skipper to again lead the way. Warrnambool rely heavily on playing coach, former Geelong Supercat Matt Alexander (21 ppg, 12rpg).

Geelong Cats (6-2)

Big V Youth League Two

vs. Coburg (4-2) @ Coburg Basketball Stadium, Sunday 12.00pm

It’ll be a big test for the Youth League roster this weekend as they look to consolidate a spot in the top half off the ladder. Coburg sits third, one place behind the Cats, and can take second spot off Geelong with a win. Centre James Swallow (12ppg, 7rpg) has benefited from the addition in recent weeks of fellow big Ben McCawley (9ppg, 8rpg), Ben Scannell is expected to miss again with a lower leg injury, leaving experienced guard Nathan Moore to guide the Cats around the floor against the Giants, who concede more than 91 points a game.
