Big V Geelong Preview (Round 7)

Greg Smith

Geelong Lady Cats (2-6)

Big V State Championship

vs. Diamond Valley (2-5) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 4.00pm

The Geelong Lady Cats approach the second half of the season needing a win over Diamond Valley to stay alive in the race for the play-offs. In its first meeting against the Eagles in round 2, Geelong was on the end of a 22 point hammering. However they were without American Audrey Muse and talented youngster Maddy Taylor. Muse, though, is in doubt for this weekend after suffering a dislocated finger in the win over Eltham on Sunday. The Lady Cats will need an improved shooting performance if they are to trouble Diamond Valley, who is also desperate to stay in touch with the top four.

Geelong Cats (4-4)

Big V Division One

vs. La Trobe University (1-7) @ Darebin Community Sports Centre, Saturday 8.00pm

vs. Warrnambool (2-6) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 2.00pm

A massive weekend in the context of the season for Greg Smith’s squad, with two wins moving the Cats into the top six. La Trobe University are the reigning Division Two champions but have struggled with the step-up in class, only claiming their first win of the season last weekend. Geelong will be confident of finishing the weekend off with victory against Warrnambool after hammering the Seahawks 107-65 on Saturday night. Star youngster Stefan Osborne (27 points on debut last week) has added another scoring threat to an already potent offence.

Geelong Cats (7-2)

Big V Youth League Two

vs. Sunbury (3-4) @  The Arena Annexe, Sunday 12.00pm

Dave Brown’s Youth League squad can become the first team to lock down a finals berth with a win over Sunbury. The Cats are on a five-match winning streak, and have built their success on physical defence which many teams have been ill-equipped to cope with.

The Jets have the unenviable task of making a quick turnaround from a Saturday night game, with just 16 hours to recover for the intense Cats. Steve Wiasak (21.3 ppg, 14 rpg) has been the key to Geelong’s success and is likely to come under close scrutiny from Sunbury.
