If you see a local councillor – say thanks for us!
If you are out and about Geelong over the next couple of weeks and you see any of the City’s Councillors, say thanks on our behalf.
The draft budget for the 2009-10 financial year has been released and we are delighted that the City has allocated two important lots of funding that will impact on basketball at the Arena.
The first is that an allocation of $25,000 has been made for the preparation of a master plan for the Arena Annex. The Board of BG have been working with council to improve the social and playing amenity here at the Arena and a master plan is the first step in ensuring all of our needs are considered. We will be actively engaged in the planning process and contributing a range of development concepts for the Annex.
The second is that an allocation of $65,000 has been provided for the remarking of the courts to cater for FIBA’s new line marking regulations that come into play over the next 18 months. We are delighted to see the City planning for that now, which is in line with Basketball Australia’s time frame for the remarking of all courts.
The Board of Basketball Geelong have been working hard with Councillors and Council staff to ensure basketball, one of the largest participant sports in the region, is getting its piece of the pie in relation to facilities and sports funding. The master plan funding is a direct response to that hard work. We need to make a special mention of the co-operation we have received from Barb Abbley – who has worked through a number of issues with us.
There is still a long way to go, but the City is again this year investing tens of millions of dollars in outdoor facilities and pavilions, in swimming pools and other leisure based planning. This funding is a small step to ensuring basketball is consistently recognised in the planning and funding process in the future.
Do us a favour, if you see any councillor, at a function or a meeting or even out walking their dog....make sure mention that Basketball Geelong appreciates the consideration they have given our sport in this year’s budget.
