Big V Geelong (Queens Birthday Break Wrap)

Ben Scannell

Geelong Lady Cats (2-9)

Big V State Championship

Bye

The mid-season break couldn’t have come at a better time for the Lady Cats following Sunday’s disappointing performance against Waverley. After matching it with the Falcons for the first half, Darren Busuttil’s charges turned in their worst second half of 2009, scoring just nine points. With seven matches left in the season, Geelong is still a mathematical chance of making the finals, but that is the last thing on Busuttil’s mind. To make matters worse, Geelong has just two home games remaining, in a season that is slowly turning into a nightmare.

Geelong Cats (8-5)

Big V Division One

Bye

Whereas the Lady Cats are happy to have a week off, the Cats have a fortnight to stew over Sunday’s disappointing loss to Altona. Despite missing veteran centre Seb Loader and back-up guard Romas Liebich, the Cats still took a strong line-up into the clash with the lowly Gators. Geelong was well placed for a all-important top-two finish in Division One, however that task has been made a little bit harder by the loss. However, in the Cats’ favour is the draw- they have six of their last nine matches at home.

Geelong Cats (9-4)

Big V Youth League Two

Bye

The Youth League squad is headed into an extended break, having both the league bye for the Queens’ Birthday weekend and a team bye the following week. The Cats are well placed for a top-two finish and the all important double-chance following Sunday’s gutsy win over Sunbury. Missing coach Dave Brown and experienced players Steve Wiasak, Nathan Moore and Rob Harding, the victory over the Jets showed a new maturity in the playing group. Ben Scannell was the star with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.
