QUOTE OF THE ROUND

“Icy-cold weather – one. Eltham and Hume – zero.” - Hume City assistant coach Mark Alabakov

COMING UP NEXT WEEK

Saturday June 13 Geelong @ Hume City (6pm)

Big V Division One Men

Altona Gators 119 dft.  Geelong Cats 106

Two teams in their first game of the round met in Altona on Sunday, as the home town Gators took on the Geelong Cats. The Cats were purring in recent weeks and with a record of 8-4 were favourite in this match up. However the Gators avenged their round nine loss to the Pacers and picked up a great win.

In the first term Altona shot an amazing 72.2 field goal percentage leading to a 30-25 lead. The shooting percentage was similar for both teams in the second term, but the Gators again outscored the Cats, taking a 60-47 halftime lead. Geelong were unable to reduce the deficit in the third term, hitting only three of their 12 three point attempts. Altona was outscored narrowly in the last term, but their lead was too much for the Cats to overcome.

For the Gators, Craig Martin top scored with 32 points including six made three point shots, while Jeremy Marsh and James Guljas contributed handy double doubles. Stefan Osborne led the scoring for the Cats with 21 points, while Paul Hutchison and Patrick Phillips both added 18 points.

Game MVP: Craig Martin (Altona)

Big V Youth League Two

GAME OF THE ROUND

Sunbury Jets 77 dft. By Geelong Cats 98

The Cats answered this challenge with a comprehensive 21 point victory over the Jets, thanks largely to a 42 point last quarter explosion which blew the game apart following a tense opening three quarters. The Jets held a two point lead coming into the fourth after seizing the advantage in a tight third quarter, however the Cats were simply superb in the fourth, scoring at will and getting the stops they needed to effectively put away any chance the Jets had of matching them. The Cats won the rebound count by 17 and shot the ball better from the field, especially in the fourth.

The Cats victory is made even more impressive given it was secured in the absence of leading scorer and rebounder Steven Wiasak, who was playing in the club’s Division One side. Numerous players stepped up in his absence, especially Ben Scannell, who had a great all round game with 13 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Andrew Luttrell was serviceable with 15 points while Simon Evans contributed 13.

The Jets see their surprising five game winning streak, which including an away win over these same Cats, come to a screeching halt. They will now need to get back to work and try to reclaim their briefly held place in second position after the break. Tom Moon was impressive with 23 points, while Ben Ritchie had 22 and Matt Smith dropped in a nice double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Jets’ 32 per cent effort from the field cost them, as did their 14 missed free throws, but the defensive meltdown in the fourth quarter will be of most concern to the Jets coaching staff.

Game MVP: Ben Scannell (Geelong)
