Big V Geelong Preview (Round 13)

Seb Loader

Geelong Lady Cats (2-11)

Big V State Championship

vs. Eltham (0-14) @ Eltham High School Saturday 6.00pm

For a rare occasion this season, the Lady Cats will go into a match as favourites, having won both previous clashesagainst Eltham in 2009. With five games remaining in the season, Geelong’s finals hopes are all but gone. However coach Darren Busuttil is keen to finish off the season on a positive note and was disappointed with the last-quarter fade-out against play-off bound Bulleen on Sunday. The winless Wildcats will be treating this as their grand final and will throw everything at Geelong. Hannah Pickford (9.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg) will have to be contained if the Lady Cats are to chalk-up win number three.

Geelong Cats (8-8)

Big V Division One

vs. Southern Peninsula (8-7) @ The Arena Annexe, Saturday 7.30pm

The Cats host Southern Peninsula hoping to snap a four-game losing streak. Greg Smith’s charges could sit two games outside of the top six with just five matches left in the season if they drop this one to the Sharks. It’s no coincidence the downturn in Geelong’s fortunes has coincided with the hamstring injury to veteran centre Seb Loader, who has made limited contributions over the past month. An undermanned Cats upset the Sharks back in round three 100-92, and will need a similar performance on Saturday night. Import Carl Arts (29.8 ppg, 14.5 rpg) is the key for the visitors, and if the Cats can curb his influence they should record win number nine.

Geelong Cats (9-5)

Big V Youth League Two

vs. Keilor (2-12) @ The Arena Annexe, Sunday 2.00pm

The Youth League squad still needs one more win to guarantee itself a play-off berth. It should come on Sunday against bottom side Keilor, who Dave Brown’s roster defeated 91-81 back in round four. The young Cats will again be without Steve Wiasak, who has been competing with the Australian Lithuanian team at the VIII Lithuanian Olympiad. That leaves much of the scoring responsibility to shooting guards Ben Scannell (13.8 ppg) and Simon Evans (12.8ppg). Victory is also important as the Cats look to stay alive for a crucial top-two finish, which guarantees a double chance in August.
