Big V Geelong Preview (Round 15)

Paul Hutchinson

Geelong Lady Cats (3-12)

Big V State Championship

vs. Hume City (14-1) @ The Arena Annexe, Saturday 8.00pm

Reality will be quick to set in for Geelong following Saturday night’s thumping 93-68 win over Diamond Valley. The Lady Cats take on championship-bound Hume City for a third time in 2009, after previous losses of 38 and 27 points. The reigning title holders have been defeated just once for the season, and get back star duo Katrina Hibbert and Sharin Milner for the match. They are likely to be without former Lady Cat Lauren Bennett, who suffered an ankle injury in the Broncos’ win over Melbourne on Sunday. American Audrey Muse got plenty of scoring support in the win over the Eagles, and the likes of Chantelle Brockett, Maddy Taylor and Vicki Mallon will have to do the same again if Geelong’s to stay in touch with Hume City.

Geelong Cats (9-9)

Big V Division One

vs. Werribee (10-8) @ The Arena Annexe, Saturday 6.00pm

vs. Sherbrooke (13-5) @ Monbulk Secondary College, Sunday 2.00pm

Nothing short of two wins will be satisfactory for the Cats this weekend as they try to keep their playoff hopes alive. Geelong is fighting Werribee for the last spot in the top six with three rounds to play, and unless it can beat them by at least 21 points on Saturday night, needs to finish a game clear of Werribee to take head-to-head out of the equation.

Veteran duo Seb Loader and Paul Hutchison both had 22 points in last weekend’s 109-83 smashing of Coburg. They especially will be keen to payback Werribee for the 20 point mauling the Cats received back in round two. Following Saturday night’s clash, Geelong makes the trip to the Dandenong Rangers for a clash with Sherbrooke, who remain in contention for a top-two finish.

Geelong Cats (11-5)

Big V Youth League Two

vs. Keilor (2-15) @ Keilor Basketball Stadium, Saturday 4.30pm

A top-two finish remains in sight for the Youth League squad, however they will have to go unbeaten through the final four games of the season if they are to get the all-important double chance come August. Coach Dave Brown will be making sure his charges don’t let their guard down against the bottom-placed Thunder. The Cats should be back to full strength, with league MVP contender Steve Wiasak returning home from last month’s Lithuanian Olympiad.
