BG Championship Wrap (Finals Week 2)

Ben Suchanek

A Ben Suchanek-inspired YMCA has snatched a Basketball Geelong division one men’s grand final berth from Pivot City.

The talented former Big V Cat scored 29 points in Tuesday night’s nail-biting 65-64 victory over the Pivotonians, which has earned Y a crack at minor premier Christian College in next week’s decider.

Former Supercats’ skipper Jordan Hill finished with 13 points for Y, while youngster Kris Van Parreren had 10.

For Pivot, Jamie Medved led the way with 17 points, while Supercats teammates Jason Reardon (14 points) and Daniel George (13) also made contributions.

Pivot will be disappointed to exit the finals in straight sets, after being the competition pacesetters for much of the season.

YMCA, coach by former Supercats’ great Craig Herbert, will go into the decider against the Eagles as massive underdogs, despite having pushed the minor premier to a point in round 11.

On that night, Nathan Herbert lit up Christian College for 40 points, however he won’t be there on Tuesday, having moved to Adelaide to join the 36ers NBL programme.

While Christian College went in the encounter without veteran big man Sebastian Loader.

Rovers have overcome YMCA in the women’s preliminary final with a 54-47 victory, earning them another crack at Try Boys in the grand final.

Lana Ryder continued her impressive finals series, scoring 14 points, while Sherrie Noonan also had 14.

Lady Cats co-captain Vicki Mallon top scored for Y with 16, while youngster Tegan Barber had 14.

Despite Try Boys win in the second semi-final, Rovers won’t discount themselves from causing an upset.

As well as pushing the Bears to four points last week, they had a win over the minor premier early in the season.
