Brief History

Early Years

1963 - A disused shop in Lillian Street, Bulleen, was used as a meeting place for the Bulleen-Templestowe Youth Club - basketball was only one of the activities offered.

1967 - The Thompson’s Road Youth Club gymnasium was completed and the Youth Club had a home.

1969 - The basketball section of the Youth Club form their own club - the Bulleen-Templestowe Basketball Club is born.

1971/2 - The BTBC enters it's first Junior Boys team into the VJABC - the only U12 team finishes second.

1972/3 - The U12 Boys win the Club's first State title.

Club Growth

1974 - In April, the Sheahans Road courts were officially opened by the Hon. Brian Dixon.  Courts were built on council land and funded by members of new co-operative. Girls began playing Junior Championship Basketball.  
 
1975 - The Club acquired its first Division 1 Women’s Team with Robbie Cadee coaching. Bulleen became affiliated with the VABA. Bulleen U14 Boys qualify for the Ausrtalian Club Championships for the first time and defeat Vermont 70 - 20 for the Club's first National title.

1975/81 - Bulleen dominates the U14 National Club Championships, winning 6 titles over seven years from 1975 to 1981.

1980 - Bulleen Championship Girls win all age groups in Victorian Championships - U12, U14, U16 and U18.  The Boys win two - U12 and U14 - making a club total of six for the year, an exceptional result.

1984 - The Bulleen Boomers acquire a license to join the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL). Men win our first SEABL Championship.

1985/86 - Bulleen win the U14 Girls Australian Club Championship.

1990 - Senior Championship (Men and Women) games to be played at “Boomarena” (Templestowe High School). Championship Women’s team win Victorian Championship. Championship Men’s team win second SEABL Title.

1992 - Bulleen Club U14 Australian Girls Champions - 5th title to Bulleen in the U14 Championships in ten years.

Recent

2004/07 - Bulleen has significant impact in the WNBL, with three successive WNBL MVP awards - to Katrina "Froggy" Hibbert in 2004/05 and 2005/06 and Holly Grima in 2006/07.

2007 - U12 boys win the Victorian Championship ... U12 girls win the National Junior Classic gold medal ... U14 girls narrowly lose the Victorian Championship final, but win U14 Girls National Club Championship - the WNBL Michele Timms Cup returns to Bulleen (head to head with Dandenong).

2008 - U14 Girls win the 2008 National Club Championship again for back to back Boomers titles, but narrowly lose their preliminary final in VC. However, the Junior Championship program is clearly back on the build.

2009 - The Bulleen Boomers WNBL team have their most successful season in Club history to make the WNBL Grand Final for the first time, but just go down 58 - 61 to the Canberra Capitals. The U12 girls and U14 boys both win gold at the National Junior Classic. A triple treat in the Victorian Championships with the U12 girls, U14 girls and U12 boys all taking out the title.

2010 - Our WNBL team make the Grand Final again in their first season with Tom Maher as Head Coach, but go down to the Canberra Capitals. Our U14 and U16 girls win the Victorian Championship title. Our junior domestic (EDBJA) and senior domestic programs continue to build with record numbers of teams.

2011 - Our WNBL team win the Championship for the first time in our history, defeating the Canberra Capitals 103-78 at The Cage. Our Junior Championship program continues to shine, with 5 girls and 3 boys selected for State teams. Our best year for a long time at the National Junior Classic, with 2 gold and 3 bronze medals - our first ever Classic title in the U12 boys and our U18 girls take the gold for the first time since 1987. Our U14 girls win the Australian U14 Club Championships as well as the Victorian Championship title. Our U16 Boys also take home the Victorian Championship title.

2012 - Our WNBL team make the grand final for the fourth year in a row but come up against a fierce Dandenong Rangers and can't capture the trophy for 2012. Our U12 and U14 girls clinch the gold at the National Junior Classic, but no joy this year with Victorian state titles. We are well represented at the State level with 4 girls and 1 boy playing for Victoria. Three Boomer girls selected in the TeamVic Schools 18&Under State Team and bring home the gold at the School Sport Australia 2012 championships.

2013 - The U12-1 girls capture the title at the Eltham-Dandenong Australia Day tournament. For the first time in many years, two Boomer girls gain scholarships to play basketball at US colleges, entering as freshman for the 2013/14 season.
