No Zone Defence Policy

Appendix 1: ZONE DEFENCE

“Zone defence” is not permitted in Under 10, 12 and 14 Age Grades.

It is expected that coaches will follow the spirit of this and ensure that their teams play man-on-man defence.

The following sequence of events will occur where “zone defence”

is detected:

  • the coach who believes that their opponents are playing “zone defence” may draw this to the attention of the referee at an appropriate break in play.
  • A referee may determine zone defence is occurring of his/own volition.
  • the referee will indicate to the “offending” team’s coach that “zone defence” is not permitted.
  • the referee should ask the UIC or any Committee Official who may be present to observe the game. If the UIC or a Committee Official is not available to observe, the two referees (or such other number) conducting the game may determine that Zone Defence is occurring.
  • If, in the opinion of the referee or official, it is confirmed that “zone defence” continues to be played, the referee will call a Technical Foul on the coach of the offending team.

Penalty for second violation- 1 foul shot and side ball possession.

  • Third violation- the referee will call a second Technical Foul on the coach of the offending team.

Penalty- coach ejected from game.

Any defence played in the back half court which does not incorporate normal man on man defensive principles shall be considered a zone. For this purpose trapping defenses which rotate back to man on man defensive principals shall be acceptable.

Specifically, violations fall into one of four categories:

  1. One or more players was not in an acceptable man on man defensive position in relation to the ball.
  2. A cutter moved all the way through the key and was not defended using acceptable man on man defensive techniques (eg bumped, switched, followed).
  3. Following a trapping or help and recover situation the team made no attempt to re-establish man on man defensive positioning.
  4. The team zone pressed and did not assume man on man defensive positioning once the ball had been advanced into the quarter court.
