Lynx set to make Waves

The final touch on what has been a series of exciting developments for the Perth Lynx is now complete, with the announcement of the team’s new name – West Coast Waves.

The call for a new team name was put out to fans in June and the rebranding process has delivered a fresh start and new look by way of a vibrant new logo, team colours and uniform.

With a strong focus on achieving positive outcomes both now and in the future, the program has seen numerous advancements in the off-season; with the new name bringing the cycle of change full circle.

Key developments for the team in recent months have included the appointment of an experienced WNBL Head Coach, a new home court at the impressive WA Basketball Centre and the massive signing of home-grown legend Tully Bevilaqua.

On the new team name, Head Coach David Herbert said: “To be involved in such a progressive and changing program is exciting. The new name is part of the process of taking this program forward for the future.”

“Waves is an exciting name and it’s now a matter of the WA community embracing us as a team, jumping on board and riding with the Waves, through the upcoming WNBL season.”

The response to the renaming competition was overwhelming with hundreds of suggestions received, majority from WA however as far reaching as Queensland, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

After considering all name suggestions based on originality, legality and suitability, the winning entry was West Coast Waves.

On winning the competition, WNBL fan Helen Theoharakis said: “As a long time supporter of the WNBL it's exciting to think that my home town team will be using a name that I suggested."

"Under the Breakers name the team enjoyed a lot of success and I hope that will be the case for the West Coast Waves."

The winner and two runners up will receive a West Coast Waves season double pass and all competition entrants will receive a double pass to the first home game of the season.

The rationale behind the new team colours was based on returning to the original team colours, from when the team first originated as the Perth Breakers back in 1988.

West Coast Waves gives the team a progression towards the future and the colours pay homage to the success and history of the team’s past.

Currently the West Coast Waves are in intensive pre-season training, with team training, strength and conditioning sessions in full swing as they prepare for the season ahead.

The WNBL season commences on October 8.
