U/16 AJC - Day Five Update

In the first game of the day, the WA Metro girls played a strong Vic Country team losing 57-32. WA struggled from the onset, with Vic Country dominating the boards out-rebounding WA 60-30 (including 29 offensive rebounds) for the game. For WA, Ruby Schleicher top scored with 7 points while Mia Satie grabbed 8 rebounds.

WA Country girls took on home-state favourites SA Metro in what was a must win game to keep in touch with the ladder leaders. The first quarter was an even affair with both teams trading baskets. A poor patch at the end of the first quarter hurt WA as SA went on to lead 22-10 at the first break. The start of the second quarter saw SA apply some full court defensive pressure which WA struggled to handle. WA were down 45-20 at half time. After the break, SA were able to build on their halftime lead running out winners 78-46.

For WA, Mackenzie Hoycard (11 points and 14 rebounds) toiled hard, while Morgan Ballantyne scored 8 points.

A 10-nil run by the WA Metro boys to start the game against SA Metro was the perfect start for the boys in a game that was important to keep WA in the mix for top 3 finish in their pool. Good execution on offence and some nice outside shooting saw WA lead 23-10 at the end of the 1st quarter.

The second quarter saw both teams trade baskets with Mitch McKenna keeping the scorers busy with 16points for the half. At the break, WA led 44-31.

WA set the tone for the 2nd half by scoring the first two baskets. Some good pressure defence saw the lead get extended with WA up 62-45 at the end of the third quarter.

The last quarter saw WA maintain their control over the game to end up winning 77-57.

For WA, Mitch McKenna top scored with 23 points and 7 rebounds, Michael Garbellini had 18 points and 6 rebounds, while Corey Shervill had 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

The WA Country boys took on the ACT in what was a must win game. WA got off to a slow start, allowing ACT to take the lead early. ACT were able to take control inside and jump the Country boys to lead 28-9 at the end of the first quarter. ACT were able to extend their lead in the second quarter by getting some good baskets in transition to lead 44-18 at half time. The second half mirrored the first with WA being unable to bridge the gap, eventually going down 76-38.

For WA, Shaun King led all scorers with 12 points and 5 assists, while Thomas Boyle (11 points and 10 rebounds) and Taj Flemming (9 points and 9 rebounds) battled to the end.

WA Metro girls played Tasmania in the last game of the day. An 8-nil run by WA to start the game was just what Coach Parker must have wished for as his team played their second game of the day. Tasmania responded with some good shooting from beyond the three line to take the lead 18-16 at quarter time.

Both teams traded baskets for the duration of the second quarter. Chelsea Belcher and Amy Atwell kept the scorers busy with 9points a piece to grab the lead back at half time 32-30.

Two big three shots from Jess Spedding widened the gap in the third quarter as WA started to exert their authority to take the lead out to 49-43 at the end of the quarter.

WA probably played their best quarter of basketball for the tournament in the last quarter, with Amy Atwell (18 points and 11 rebounds) leading the way. Mia Satie (8 points and 14 rebounds), Cameron Flynn (9 points and 12 rebounds), Chelsea Belcher and Jessica Spedding (9 points each) also contributed to a great team win 65-54.
