Carleen means business on the court

SHELLEY basketballer Carleen Steacy was part of WA’s unsuccessful tilt at the Under-16 Junior Championships in Tasmania, but said lining up against the top players in the country was an invaluable experience in her development.

The WA Metro team finished sixth overall, behind winners Victoria Metro and runners-up SA Country.

The Willetton Senior High School student said she was disappointed the team could not finish higher up the table, but said she was pleased with her own performance.

“The tournament was really good for me, one of my best,” the 15-year-old said.

“It was an amazing experience… I learnt how to hold myself mentally and physically against top players.

“You learn how to become a stronger player.”

WA Metro’s last game was the play-off for fifth and sixth position against Queensland South, with the WA side going down 66-43.

The men’s Victoria Metro team made it a clean sweep for the State by toppling Victoria Country 62-50 in the final.

Steacy has represented WA twice, including the recent juniors.
