The umpires failed to split the efforts of three top juniors in their
quest to take out the SJFL's most prestigious award,
the Virgona Medal. The winners were Matthew Croft (Imperials),
the first SJFL player to win back to back medals,
Nathan Bower (Mildura) who emulated the efforts of his
more celebrated brother, Brendan, and Robert Morgan,
only the second medal winner from Robinvale.
Winner of the Hynes Medal was Robert Bowden (Robinvale),
who streeted a very classy field.

Extract from The Sunraysia Football Guide
of August 29th 1987
GIVE O'MALLEY THE SENIORS AND JACKO CAN COACH THE KIDS!
Fourteen years have now elapsed since a meeting that changed the
Mildura Under 14 Football League into the SJFL occurred.
Reflecting on those 14 years, the biggest plus re junior football in
Sunraysia is the decline in the ugly parent syndrome; a trait that
was in epidemic proportions in our formative years.
Sure you still get the yobbo and broom rider that dissipate their
frustration by offering inane speculation re an umpire's birth status
but by and large, this is a very occasional occurrence.
Another progressional improvement over the years has been
the willingness of junior coaches to seek accreditation courses
providing an overall objectivity to what we think we are
doing in the SJFL.
Unfortunately how we arrive at this unified objectivity through
the various programs run at each club is the bone of contention.
Some clubs train with one ball per lad while others work a whole
squad with just four footballs.
Some clubs stress the use of the opposite side skills while
others do not.
Over the coming summer months, I urge clubs to give a lot of
thought to the appointment of their junior coaches.
Arguably the lower the age group the more qualified should be
the coach, as an untended garden cannot be expected
to bear quality fruit.
Peter O'Toole.
WE ARE WHAT YOU MADE US
If you want a biff in the beak try telling "Grumpy Hynes" that
Sunraysia has not got the greatest junior league in the land.
If "Grumpy" misses you and you are within range, a wallop with
Evelyn Andrews handbag may change your opinion.
The SJFL is without peer and when reading the list of credits
below of people who have assisted us this year it is gratifying to
realise that the SJFL is truly a communal project for the benefit
of Sunraysia kids. No doubt I will miss somebody but to all
those people who have contributed to the welfare of the SJFL,
many, many thanks.
Firstly, our major sponsor Geoff Martin, his company, and the
many helpers that did the blanket round each week.
A special thank you to the Red Cliffs Football Club for
their mammoth effort – again.
The SFL executive and delegates who always looked kindly
on any requests broached of the SJFL. Bob Fox, Sunraysia Daily,
Roy Harwod 3MA, Bill Sauer, and Peter Manolas for their media considerations.
The Sunraysia Umpires Association. The Mildura
City and Shire Councils, and Ron Mayes the City Oval Curator.
Peter and Di Coombes of McDonalds who made available
over 400 food vouchers over the season. Laurie Kalms whose
bus company got our lads to Broken Hill for close to cost. Des Tobin
of Tobin Sound. Brian Weightman for the many overtime hours
he puts into his job commitment.
Finally, a big thank you to the football-supporting public
whose few cents in the blanket each week gave many local lads
the chance to play in representative matches. The junior footballers of
Sunraysia are indeed fortunate to have such people catering for
their welfare. On their behalf, I thank you all for being what you
are and for making us what we are, the envy of
all other junior leagues.
