The AFL Canberra Umpires' Association (AFLCUA) is a not-for-profit organisation incorporated in 1983. The objective of the AFLCUA is to promote the game of Australian Rules football and the interests of football generally by:
-
fostering umpiring and improving the general standard of umpiring;
-
coordinating the efforts of the Association with the AFL Canberra League and other footballing bodies; and
-
encouraging good fellowship and furthering the interests of Association members.
Both male and female umpires are involved with a range of ages from 14 to over 50. The interests of the Association are represented and managed by an Executive body elected by the Members.
The AFLCUA provides umpires to all levels of competition in the Canberra region. These competitions include teams from Canberra, Queanbeyan, regional New South Wales, Sydney and some Canberra schools.
From 2011 members have had the opportunity to be involved in the North Eastern AFL competition (NEAFL). The NEAFL is a new league involving teams from NSW, Queensland, the ACT and Northern Territory. Four AFL teams are represented with the reserve teams from the Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns, GWS Giants and Sydney Swans.
2011 also saw the introduction of the Foxtel Cup, a 'Champions League' style competition involving teams from around the country.
A career path for elite umpires is also provided, with umpires having the opportunity to be offered contracts to officiate AFL competition matches. Currently 5 members are contracted to officiate at the AFL level.
The Association is managed by an Executive Committee elected each year by the members.
