Graeme Reid

President

When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball at intermediate school in New Zealand, which is the equivalent to Year 6 here. I represented my high school in basketball every year, culminating in winning the Auckland Regional Secondary School Championships and going on to finish 9th in the NZ Secondary School Championships.

When did you come to Norths?

I joined Norths in 1987, playing basketball with a group of friends from work, and I have played every year since then. I currently play twice a week and am also refereeing and doing some referee coaching.

Have you been involved in representative basketball at all?

I have coached many Norths representative teams at both junior and senior level. In 2000, I coached our U23 team which had an undefeated season and wont the State Women’s title.

What’s your day job?

I am a Chartered Accountant and Justice of Peace. I have previously been Financial Controller of the Sydney Kings and currently Basketball NSW is one of my clients and I act as their Financial Controller. I have worked with a wide-range of organisations from large multi-nationals, down to small 1-person countries.

What off court involvement have you had in basketball?

I have been involved in the administration of NSBA most of the time I have been playing here. My first role was as Tribunal Chairman in 1989 and I served on the NSBA from 1990-2000 and returned to the board in 2006. I have been President since 2012, having previously served in that role from 1991-2000. I was also served as a director of Basketball NSW and the Sydney Basketball Council and represented NSW on the Council of the Australian Basketball Federation in 1992-93.

I was awarded Life Membership of Norths in 1999 and inducted as an inaugural member of our Hall of Fame in 2011. I was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000

 

Vik Kortian

Vice President

When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing when I was 9 years old and have been involved with the game ever since, and always will be!

When did you come to Norths?

I have been playing at Norths since 1986 and started refereeing here in 1988. I have been a member at Norths since 1986, only missing three years (1993-95), when I was working in Michigan, USA.

Have you been involved in representative basketball at all?

I represented the Northern Regional at the 1979 NSW CHS Championships and played for the Sydney Supersonics from 1985-86, under legendary coach Charlie Amitt. While working in the USA, I continued my involvement with the game and our team reached the grand final of the Michigan Championship. I have refereed both junior and senior representative games.

What’s your day job?

I am the owner of Performance Improvement Institute, which specialises in Business Transformation and Lean Six Sigma. I am also an adjunct lecturer at the Australian Graduate School of Management and the Macquarie Graduate School of Management. In these course I teach Operations Management and Quantitative Methods. I hold an Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering (UNSW), Masters in Business Administration, Master of Arts and am working on my PhD.

What off court involvement have you had in basketball?

I have assisted the NSBA Board in various capacities since 2004 and have been a board member since 2011 and was elected to the position of Vice President in 2013. I am also an active member of the Homenetmen Sports and Scouting organisation and have been for over 45 years. I have held numerous positions within the Homenetmen organisation including serving as Australian Regional President for 6 years. I am currently on the Central Executive that oversees activities involving more than 30,000 members in 103 chapters in twenty countries.

  

Arnie Selvarajah

Finance Director

When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing Basketball at school at the age of 15. I have played since then. I have represented my high school, the Combined Associated Schools, The University of New South Wales, Sydney Comets and more recently Norths at the Masters level.

When did you come to Norths?

I started playing at Norths in 1982 and 1983 and then returned 2005. This coincided with my sons playing in the Little Bears league. I have played in multiple grades and competitions at Norths since that time. I subsequently also started coaching Club basketball and then in the Junior Representative program.

Have you been involved in representative basketball at all?

I have played at the Senior Representative level for the Sydney Comets. I have also coached a Senior Womens and Youth League Womens teams for Sutherland Basketball Association. More recently as mentioned above I have coached teams in the Junior Representative program (U12, U14 and U16 mens). Both my sons have also played in the Junior Reps program since 2009.

What’s your day job?

I am the CEO and Director of Bell Direct, on Online Stockbroking business. It is a division of an ASX listed company called Bell Financial Group. I am also on a number of not for profit Boards.

What off court involvement have you had in basketball?

I have been on the Board of the Sydney Comets in the late 1980’s and more recently on the Board of NSBA since 2012.

 

Louise Bortolin

Director

When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball at the age of 16 in Lismore and have played continuously since then. I love playing and watching basketball and have met wonderful people through basketball that have become lifelong friends. I will continue to play while its fun and the body will permit!

When did you come to Norths?

I joined Norths in the mid 80’s and have been playing here for at least 24 years, if not longer (I have stopped counting!). My family has also been closely involved at Norths, with both sons starting in the Little Bears League and progressing through Miniball into junior and (for my oldest son) senior competitions.

Have you been involved in representative basketball at all?

Both my sons have represented Norths at junior level and I have had a long involvement in the management of junior representative teams.

What’s your day job?

I work for an international airline and have held various roles over the years in Marketing, Customer Relations, and Retails Sales and am currently working in Corporate Sales.

What off court involvement have you had in basketball?

I have been on the NSBA board since 2008 and have also been involved in the management of teams at all levels of domestic competition.

 

Susan MacDonald

Director

When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball at high school. Being from a small country town, basketball was just starting off, and being a local netballer meant I could catch a ball – therefore was an automatic selection for our schools first girls’ basketball team. It was basketball all the way from there.

When did you come to Norths?

I first came to Norths in the early 90’s if my memory serves me. My only gaps playing at Norths have been when I’ve been living overseas or injuries. 

Have you been involved in representative basketball at all?

I played with the NSBA Senior Women’s Representative team for many years. I’m still using the prize we won way back – it was a memorable moment playing in the finals in the Sydney Conference competition. 

What’s your day job?

I work in financial services, and have done for a number of years now. I am currently working as a Senior Change Consultant in a large transformation project for NAB Wealth (or MLC as it’s more commonly known).

What off court involvement have you had in basketball?

This is my first official non-player involvement in basketball.

 

Anthony Stockdale

Director

When did you start playing basketball?

My family moved to the US when I was 13. The students in my year would hold dunk competitions at lunch. After watching those kids flying around I was hooked on basketball

When did you come to Norths?

I joined Norths in the early 90’s playing youth basketball at North Sydney Boys High School. The floors were like an ice rink and the lighting was terrible. We won our first game and I still play with some of the guys who were on that team today.

Have you been involved in representative basketball at all?

Was involved in some rep basketball in my early 20’s as a player, but was never really that good to stick with it.

What’s your day job?

Entrepreneur. Have founded a few businesses, primarily ones that operate in the digital space, including strategy, community building, and fundraising via web, social media, video, tv and film. We focus on working on good causes that appeal to our team, including climate change, aboriginal health, anti-slavery and human rights.

What off court involvement have you had in basketball?

Have coached on various levels. Primary school with St Michaels, and High School with Redlands. 

 

Michael Haynes

Chief Executive Officer

When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball in 1979, at the age of 12 in Wodonga. I have very fond memories of watching my dad play on an asphalt court at the back of the Wodonga Post Office, as I sat on the bonnet of our car. I think I was 9 or 10 when I did my first scorebench for my dad’s team.

When did you come to Norths?

I joined Norths as CEO in July 2012, having moved from my position as Chief Operating Officer with Basketball Australia.

Have you been involved in representative basketball at all?

I was a very good role player in junior representative teams in Wodonga. My U18 team won the Victorian Country Club Championship in 1983, which was the highest point my playing career reached.

I have coached since the age of 15 and, at representative level, have coached teams at the Australian Junior Championships in U14, U16, U18 and U20 age groups as both an assistant and head coach. I was the assistant coach of the Australian Women’s team that won a bronze medal at the World University Games in 2005 and the co-head coach of the Australia Women’s team that won a Gold medal at the Oceania Youth Championships in 2004. I was also an assistant coach with the Sydney University Flames in 2006, when we lost the grand final to Canberra.

I am a FIBA accredited coach and presenter and conduct coaching clinics for FIBA. In 2013, I will conduct clinics in Indonesia and NZ.

What’s your day job?

I am the CEO at NSBA!

What off court involvement have you had in basketball?

I am currently the Oceania President of the World Association of Basketball Coaches and have been in this position since 2010. In my role at Basketball Australia I lead the development of new coach and official development programs.
