In the final two games of Round 19 today, winners were Footscray and Coburg.
The win for Footscray means they move back to second spot, and only need a win in the final round to secure a top two spot at the end of the home and away season.
Lions break drought against Dolphins
Coburg has broken its six year losing streak against Frankston producing a 15-point win at home to claim the ETU Cup.
The Dolphins welcomed back Shannon Taylor who helped Frankston race out to a 12 point lead at quarter time. Taylor’s goal would be the last till the third term for the visitors as Coburg kicked the only two majors of the second term, both coming in the last 10 minutes of the quarter to Andrew Sturgess and Daniel Venditti to get them within a point at half time.
The third term was a shootout between the teams, as firstly Frankston moved out to a 16-point lead with back to back goals, but Coburg clawed its way back as Dion Hill gave the Lions the lead by a point at three quarter time.
It was again goal for goal in the final term as the lead changed three times in the first 10 minutes, but Nathan Thomas sealed the game for Coburg with two goals before time on to help the Lions to a breakthrough win against their bogey side.
Hill and Lech Featherstone led the way with two each, with the latter now within a goal of the Frosty Miller Medal title with one round to play.
Best for the Lions were Ozgur Uysal, Adam Saad and Jordan Rogers. Luke Potts and Scott Simpson kicked two each for the Dolphins, with Simpson among the best with Damian Garner and Jarrod Irving.
Bulldogs third term sets up win
Footscray were forced to do it tough against Casey Scorpions, but eventually ran away with the win in the final term by 27 points.
After a three goal to nil first term, it looked how far for the Bulldogs, despite them having the breeze in the first term. Casey fought back well in the second term kicking five goals to two to surprise the Bulldogs as they led by three points at half time. The visitors shared the goals around, with Cam Pedersen a key in the second term.
The lead was short lived for Casey after half time, as Footscray dominated the play with 20 inside 50s to Casey’s one. Fletcher Roberts helped keep returning Casey forward Jesse Hogan quiet throughout the afternoon, as Lin Jong was busy in the middle of the ground, and Jack Redpath provided a target up forward. Footscray kicked five unanswered goals to push their lead out to 28 point at three quarter time.
Casey Scorpions cut the margin to 22 points early in the final term, but Footscray were able to answer. The Bulldogs replied to each Scorpion goal in the final term, running out 27-point winners.
Redpath led the way up forward with three goals, while Jong (27 disposals) kicked two, with both in the best with Nick Lower (21) and Jase Perkins.
Pedersen kicked three for Casey, and was the best for the Scorpions along with James Strauss and Byrce Rutherford.
