The Peter Jackson VFL will take on the West Australian Football League in state league football on Saturday May 11 in Western Australia.
The match will be played at Northam, WA and will be the first time the two state league competitions have met since the VFL defeat the WAFL at Leederville Oval by 55 points in 2010. Northam is approximately 95km from Perth and has been selected by the WAFL to promote regional football at a new $11 million sporting facility.
AFL Victoria has appointed the same successful coaching panel as last year, which includes head coach Gary Ayres (Port Melbourne) along with Gerard FitzGerald (North Ballarat), Simon Goosey (Frankston) and Darren Flanigan who has replaced Nathan Bibby as the VFL Academy Coach/Mentor.
The state selectors, which include the coaching panel above along with Bruce Davis (Coaches’ Coordinator) Peter Weightman and John Hook, are currently seeking nominations from all VFL Senior Coaches to form an initial squad. Nominations will then be reviewed in the early rounds of the season regarding form and the general structure of the side from the player available. As per last year, only VFL listed players are eligible for selection.
The state game gives players from the Peter Jackson VFL an opportunity to represent the competition and the state of Victoria. It also provides with a great vehicle to push their names forward in front of AFL recruiters. It should be noted that six players from last year’s VFL team were drafted to AFL clubs primary or rookie list (27% of the team).
The state game will start at 12.10pm (WA time) on Saturday May 11 and will be broadcast live into Victoria on ABC TV from 2pm (AEDST).
