Preliminary Finals

League WOMEN –Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

Trish Graham dropped in a game high 25pts to lead the Uni Rebels to a 77-57 victory over the Tracy Village Jets, setting up a rematch with Lightning in Saturday nights Grand Final. Graham (11.6ppg) hit 12 of her total in the first quarter as the Rebels built up a 24-15 lead that they maintained through to the half time break, leading 40-31. With four other players hitting double figures the Rebels didn’t have to rely on a big output from the teams leading scorer, Jamie-Lee Peris (23.58ppg) and this kept the Jets scrambling on defense. Offensively the Jets were hanging in there with Jade Keightley, Keisha Tinley and Annabelle Harbison (all on 12pts) putting up some respectable numbers, but the Rebels had more scoring options to go to. The third quarter proved to be critical for the Jets as they fell behind by a further 10pts during a Rebel 20-10 run sparked by Graham and daughter Michelle Freil (12 @ 5/7 from the field) who combined for 11 of the team’s points during the run. In the last quarter the Jets needed 19pts to overhaul the Rebels but the uphill battle proved too much of a challenge. The Rebels hit 38% of their shots to the Jets 36 with the big difference being that the Rebels put up almost 20 more shots than the Jets. Jaylene Bonson (16), Peris (12) and Vanessa Kurnoth (10) all played a big part in the win for the Rebels who last played in a Grand Final in 2008 when they narrowly beat Lightning by one point 55-54. This matchup should be another nail biter.

Graham is now placed second on the all time scoring list as she just passed by Ansetts Kathy Kellum (5207pts from 659 games). Graham has 5212 points from 480 League games giving her a 10.8 ppg average, second to Karmi Dunn who has 12.4 ppg from 447 games and 5543 points scored.

Jodi Tremlett moved into 10th place all time in games played with 462, surpassing Carol Warren from the Waratahs on 461.

Ladder:       Lightning 12-5, Uni Rebels 12-6, Tracy Village Jets 8-10, Eagles 6-11, Ansett 5-11

Next week: Grand Final Saturday 4 December- 6:30pm Lightning v Uni Rebels

League MEN – Uni Rebels v Warriors

Defending champions Uni Rebels stopped the Warriors Grand Final aspirations with a workmanlike 74-66 win that sets up a rematch with Ansett in the Grand Final. Expectations were high that the Warriors were going to pull off the upset of the year, but the Rebels managed to shut down the high scoring duo of Bayi Handy (8 @ 23.5ppg) and Brice Giles (10 @ 21.8ppg) keeping them well below their averages. On the other hand, Ethan Kennedy from the Rebels was having a blinder, hitting 59% from the field for a game high 27pts to go along with 12 boards. Marcus Ch’ng (18pts and 8/11 from the free throw line) and Chris Baldwin (14pts and 9rebs) were also finding the net and playing tough on defense. Nothing much separated the team’s points wise, but the Rebels held a sleight edge after a second quarter 14-9 run that gave them a 34-30 half time lead. Johnnie McLawhorn kept the Warriors in the game with a team high 23pts but the lack of usual support from the rest of the team disappointed the Warrior supporters who expected a place in the Grand Final.   The Rebels now have a chance for a ‘repeat’ in the Grand Final. They beat the Warriors last year 87-59 and will pit their experience against the Ansett club who haven’t been in a Grand Final since 1999 when the likes of Craig Evans, Matt Rodgers, Steve Loweke and Michael Crawford were carrying the Blues load…should be a ripper.

Jamie Hamill from the Uni Rebels will tie Jeff Larson for games played with 532 should he take the court during the men’s Grand Final. Hamill began playing in 1990 during the wet season and since then has only missed 3 wet season competitions while compiling his 531 games.

Ladder:       Uni Rebels 17-3, Ansett 16-3, Eagles 12-7, Warriors 10-10, Lightning 6-12, Tracy Village Jets 5-13 and Razzle 0-18.

Next week: Grand Final Saturday 4 December -     8:00pm Ansett v Uni Rebels
