Round Five– Challenge Season

League WOMEN –Eagles vs Lightning

Eagles flew home in the last quarter to slip past Lightning 45-43 in a early season upset. Lightning had stormed out of the blocks in the first quarter for a 20-8 lead and looked to be in charge of matters after holding a handy 29-15 lead at the major break. However, the lady Eagles put it all together in the second half behind the hot handed Greta Hollis-Stephensen who set a new Womens League record for most free throws in a game with 15 as she netted a game high 25 while leading the birds back from an almost improbable position to win their first game of the season. With Lightning leading 42-29 through the efforts of Claire O’Bryan (16) and Chelsea Cook (12) in the first three quarters not many would have given the Eagles much of a chance, but they pulled this one out of the bag and it might be what they needed to get their season on track. Megan Fitzpatrick lent support to Hollis-Stephensen with 9 points.

League Women – Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels made it three from three with a close encounter with the Tracy Village Jets as they just pipped the Bombers by five points 57-52 to take over first place on the ladder. Nothing much separated the teams until the closing minutes of play in the last quarter as Jaylene Boundry and Jaylene Bonson hit back to back three pointers to give the Rebels breathing space as the game wound down. Bonson finished with a game high 20 with team mate Michelle Friel adding 14. The Jets put up some good numbers with Tara Carroll (17), Keisha Tinley (14) and Jade Keightley (11) but couldn’t hold out the Rebels when the game swung in their favour in the last few minutes.

Ladder:                   Uni Rebels 3-0, Tracy Village Jets 2-2, Lightning 2-1, Eagles 1-2 & Ansett 0-3

Next Week:            Ansett v Uni Rebels 6:15pm, Tracy Village Jets v Lightning 7:45pm, Eagles-bye

League MEN – Uni Rebels v Warriors

The Warriors set up a minor upset of sorts as newcomers Robert Oliver & Jay Johnson teamed up with Tendayi Muyambi to hold off the Uni Rebels 68-60 for their first win of the season. The trio combined for 50 points as the Warriors built up enough of a lead through three quarters to enable them to withstand the last quarter surge from the Rebels. Jarrod Sheppard didn’t get near to his season high 41 from last week, but he kept the Rebels in the game for three quarters with his aggressive offense, but the effort left him a bit drained in the last quarter. However Tyrone Bain provided some inspiration and hope with a couple of late treys, but they proved to be just that…late. Sheppard finished with a game high 23 and Tommy Blake had 14 for the Rebels while Warriors Oliver had 16, & Johnson and Muyambi had 17 each.

League Men – Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Tracy Village Jets put up another 90+ game as they shot down the Eagles 92-67 to remain undefeated in the Challenge Season competition. A very balanced scoring effort from the Jets, minus leading scorer Travis Ellis, paid big dividends. Six players hit double figures with captain Michael Maclean leading the way with 17 & three players, Nick Pattrick, Clinton Kononen & Ryan Marshall all hitting 16. The Jets put the pressure on early after jumping out to a 26-11 first quarter lead that challenged the Eagles for the remainder of the game, proving too much of a lead to overhaul. Henry Bui hit a team high 19 for the Eagles with Joseph Johnson (14) and Shane Harrison (11) lending support.

League Men – Razzle v Lightning

Young William Carroll showed that he could prove to be as much a scoring threat as older brother David when he led the Razzle to a 85-73 win against Lightning. Carroll hit a season and game high 25 points with a solid all round game with plenty of support from three point specialist Ross Vasic who dropped in 24 points (including 5 treys). Mayon Jook and Charlie Reaper also chipped in with 14 and 12. Lightning started out strong with a 19-14 first quarter lead, but failed to sustain the momentum. They also failed to contain Carroll and Vasic as they peppered the hoop throughout the remaining three quarters. Cameron Bailey and Chris Charman shared scoring honours with 14 each while Karsten Oltrop (11) and Jesse Bell (10) also hit double figures.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 4-0, Razzle 2-2, Ansett & Uni Rebels 2-1, Eagles & Warriors 1-2 & Lightning 0-4

Next Week:    Warriors v Lightning 6:15pm, Uni Rebels v Eagles 7:45pm, Razzle v Ansett 9:15pm, Tracy Village Jets-bye
