Round Seven– Challenge Season

League WOMEN – Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

Keisha Tinley (18pts) put together an all round game to lead the Tracy Village Jets to a 58-46 win against the Eagles in Round 7 of the DBA Challenge Season competition. The Jets jumped started the game with a 15-8 first quarter that gave them a lead that they steadily built on during the remainder of the game. The Eagles matched the Jets in the second quarter, but fell away after the half time break to find themselves down 45-31 going into the last quarter. Katherinie Hollis (8) and newcomer Rachel Watchorn (13), a former SEBL player, led a spirited comeback for the Eagles that saw them outscore the Jets 15-13, but Tinley and Jets newcomer Georgii Howlett (who played for Norwood in the ABA recently) replied in kind to give the Bombers their third win of the season.

League Women – Lightning v Ansett

Lightning edged past Ansett 50-46, but were lucky to have a ‘get outa jail’ card up there sleeves. After rambling to an impressive 31-14 lead at half time thanks to 23 point outburst from gun shooter Claire O’Bryan Lightning looked to be cruising to their third win of the season. However, they left the door ajar just enough for Ansett to climb back into contention behind the shooting of Kate Smyth (11) and Jennifer Kinsella (12) who combined for 16 second half points as the Blues slowly pegged the gap back. In the end it was O’Bryan (31pts @21.5ppg) who got the Lightning across the line as she scored the last 8 points to preserve the win.

Ladder:                   Uni Rebels 3-2-0, Lightning 3-2-1, Tracy Village Jets 3-1-2, Eagles 1-1-3 & Ansett 0-2-4

League MEN – Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

Travis Ellis (photo at top) celebrated his addition to the DBA Players Honour Board by firing in a team high 31 points (24ppg) that helped to pave the way to an 80-71 victory over rivals Uni Rebels. Despite a game high 34 points by Rebel Jarrod Sheppard (31.7ppg) and 20pts from newly acquired former Ansett player Rashad Chase the Jets won every quarter apart from the second to record their fifth win of the season and remain unbeaten through seven rounds. Three other Jets hit double figures: Michael MacLean (14), Clint Kononen (11) and junior Nick Pattrick (10). Leading 55-50 at the start of the last quarter the Jets stiffened on defense to outscore the Rebels 25-21 to seal the win. In addition to the win the Jets were not only celebrating Ellis’s milestone, but also that of Daniel Miller who also made it onto the Players Honour Board with 315 games played in League. Congratulations to both players for their achievements.

League Men – Lightning v Eagles

Timmy Duggan played his first game of the season and helped the Eagles to a 73-64 win over Lightning… who have yet to record a win. Scoring a game high 21, with support from Joseph Johnson (18), Matt Kernick & Henry Bui (10 each) Duggan orchestrated a game plan that secured the Eagles only their second win of the season, but it was a win that moved them into a tie with two other teams for third spot on the ladder! With both teams missing starters at game time it was a toss up as to the outcome. Even without some of their starting five Lightning still had four players in double figures, but the key player for the game proved to be Duggan. Dylan De Santis led Lightning with 14 followed by Cameron Bailey (13), Joseph Kuhn (11) and Tony Halikos (10).

League Men – Warriors v Ansett

Ansett moved into outright second place on the ladder with a gritty 65-54 win against the Warriors. The Warriors were looking to make it two upset wins in a row after last weeks win against the Rebels, but Ansett was having nothing to do with that as the Hunt brothers, Tom & Matt, plus Cameron McKenzie combined for almost 50pts to shoot down the aspirations of the Maroons. Tom Hunt hit a game high 22, Mckenzie 17 and Matt Hunt 10 to lead the Ansett attack. The second half belonged to Ansett as they stormed back from a 33-35 first half deficit. They out scored the Warriors 32-19 behind the hot handed Tom Hunt who hit 15 of his total points scored, (9 in the last quarter). Leon Schulz & Robert Oliver hit 13 each for the Warriors.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 5-1-0, Ansett 3-2-1, Razzle, Uni Rebels, & Eagles 2-2-2, Warriors 1-2-3, & Lightning 0-1-5

Saturday 12 March:          Ansett v Eagles 5pm, Tracy Village Jets v Lightning 6:30pm & Razzle v Warriors 8pm, Uni Rebels-bye

Next Week:    Tracy Village Jets v Ansett 6:15pm, Razzle v Eagles 7:45pm, Uni Rebels v Lightning 9:15pm, Warriors-bye
