Round Eight– Challenge Season

League WOMEN – Uni Rebels v Lightning

The top two teams from Womens League, Uni Rebels & Lightning, played out a 52-52 draw Saturday at the DBA Stadium at Marrara. Neither team led by more than 9pts throughout the encounter and the outcome was still in doubt more than half way through the last quarter. With the teams swapping the lead ten times during the game it wasn’t until Vanessa Kurnoth launched a couple of downtown treys in the closing minutes that the games momentum shifted to the Rebels and they were able to catch the Lightning for the draw. Jaylene Bonson led the Rebels with 17 points and team mate Delsey Ah Wang hit an impressive 40% of her shots for 14 while Claire O’Bryan put up 18 for the Lightning with support from Courtney Althouse, a recent transfer from the Eagles, who hit 50% from the field for 16 points.

League Women – Ansett v Eagles

Eagle Leonie Snowdon (pictured above) picked the right time to shine for the Eagles as she led them to a close 46-41 win against bottom dwellers Ansett. Snowdon hit 70% of her shots from the field and 50% from the charity stripe for 17 points as the Eagles regrouped from Tuesday’s loss to the Jets. The biggest lead the birds had was 10 points, but Ansett kept fighting back behind the efforts of Jennifer Kinsella (14) and Olivia Birkett (11) despite some woeful shooting from outside the arc (2/34 from behind the three point line). Ansett had the lead at half time 20-18, but the Eagles quickly overhauled the Blues inside five minutes into the third quarter and were never headed again. Greta Hollis-Stephensen added 9 and Rachel Watchorn 8 for the Eagles while Lauren Flanegan hit 10 for Ansett.

Ladder:                   Lightning 3-3-1, Uni Rebels 3-3-0, Tracy Village Jets 3-1-2, Eagles 2-1-3 & Ansett 0-2-5

League MEN –Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

League leading Tracy Village Jets took advantage of a undermanned Lightning outfit to hand out a 95-45 thumping that leaves the Bombers still undefeated after eight rounds of play. Some young and upcoming Jets led the scoring with Liam MacLachlan (pictured above) pumping in 22 points, Nick Pattrick 17, and Brad East with 12 while experienced campaigners Travis Ellis, & Michael Maclean also chipped in with 12 each. For the Lightning junior Justin Rualo top scored with 14 to earn a nod of approval from his coach Jason Ivinson who had to don the colours to avoid a forfeit. Brodie Hertel lent support with 9.

League Men – Razzle v Warriors

The Warriors needed overtime to overcome Razzle 85-82 despite a season high of 46 for Razzle’s Ross Vasic who nailed 7 treys in his total. After a slow start to the first quarter the Razzle got back into the game to tie it all up 23 all. From that point onwards the teams traded the lead 16 times to finish up the regulation game at 80 apiece! In the overtime the Warriors did just enough and hung on for the win that lifted them into a third place tie with the Razzle and Eagles. Tendayi Muyambi hit 48% of his shots (12/25) for 24 points to lead the Warriors with support from Robert Oliver (18), Christian Williams (14) and Ben Higgins (12) while Vasic from the Razzle had help from Cody Edwards and Eric Klenke who hit 10 each.

League Men – Ansett v Eagles

Ansett kept their grip on second place with an 86-66 win against the Eagles who, like the Lightning, were missing a few key players from their team. The Eagles stayed with the Blues for a quarter before Ansett’s experience took over. Ansett began to fire on all cylinders in the second quarter as they raced to a 43-27 half time lead that progressively stretched out in the second half as they cruised to their fourth win of the season. Matt Hunt was particularly inspirational in leading the Blues with a team and season high 25 with support from the veteran Jake Feeney who also hit a personal season high of 23. Junior Henry Bui led the Eagles with 14 followed by Jayden Niven-Trewin with 12 and Matt Kernick with 11.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 6-1-0, Ansett 4-2-1, Warriors, Razzle & Eagles 2-2-3, Uni Rebels 2-2-2 & Lightning 0-1-6
