Round Fifteen– Challenge Season

League WOMEN – Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

And the beat goes on and on and on. Uni Rebels ticked off another win in the DBA Challenge Season with a 75-62 victory against the second placed Tracy Village Jets. After lasts weeks scare from the Eagles the Rebels made some adjustments in their game plan and came out firing on all cylinders, keeping their undefeated streak alive. Jaylene Bonson lit up the score board in the first quarter to give the Rebels an early lead 23-15 that they built on quarter by quarter to remain undefeated after 15 rounds of play. Demi Cubillo grabbed a share of the Jets points hitting 15 as did veteran Jenna Lew Fatt and Tikesa Docherty-Cole & Tara Carroll both had 11, but they were no match on the night for Rebel Bonson (25.7ppg) who finished on 17 with team mate Trish Graham (11.8ppg) stealing the game scoring honours with 19. Delsey Ah Wang (pictured) added 14 and if she is beginning to find form she will add to the already potent attack of the Rebels.

League Women – Eagles v Lightning

Lightning reclaimed a bit of their swagger after beating the Eagles 61-47. The Eagles seemed to have the Lightning on toast this season, winning the first two encounters, but a solid team game gave Lightning the boasting rights as the season draws towards the playoffs. The Eagles had an opportunity to move within a couple of points of Lightning on the ladder, but the lid was on the basket for the birds. Clair O’Bryan (20.7ppg) found her way to the basket for a game high 25 with Eagle transfer Courtney Althouse chipping in with 14 and Suzie Crowe hitting a season high 11. Lightning grabbed a early 15-10 first quarter lead and then ran off 34 points to 14 against the Eagles in the second & third quarter to take a commanding 49-24 lead heading into the last quarter. The Eagles rallied (23-12), but it wasn’t enough to overhaul the Lightning. Leonie Snowdon (7ppg) led the Eagles with 13 followed by 12 from Greta Hollis-Stephensen and 11 from Rachel Watchorn.

League Men –Eagles v Ansett

The Eagles upset Ansett in a thrilling 83-80 encounter that boosted the Eagles outside chance of finishing in second place on the ladder. The new recruit for the Eagles, Buster Perkins, hit the floor running as he filled in at the point guard role for Timmy Duggan who pulled up injured in the second quarter. Perkins put up a game high 31 points (including 6 treys), and brought the rest of the team into play. Ansett was left trailing 19-11 at the end of one quarter, but lifted behind Bryce Whitaker (24 @ 12.1ppg) in the second to close the gap to just two points 34-32 at the half time break. The Eagles ran off 26-15 points in the third quarter before a bombardment of three pointers from the Blues in the last quarter narrowed the gap. Matt Hunt (15.1ppg) from the Blues hit 15 (4 treys), and his brother Tom also hit 15 with Cameron Parnham adding 11. Eagles leading scorer for this season so far, Joseph Johnson (15.2ppg) had 16 and Matthew Kernick added 14.

League Men – Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

Tracy Village Jets took the light out of the Lightning with a 90-65 win to extend their winning streak to 12 straight. Lightning were riding high after three wins on the trot and a chance to break into the top four, but the Bombers extinguished any hope of that happening with a dominant first quarter run of 18-5 and never looked back. Apart from young Liam MacLachlan (10ppg) who led all scorers with 20 it was the veterans of the team that paved the way for the win. Daniel Miller (17 @ 7ppg), Ryan Marshall (16 @ 8.4ppg) and Michael MacLean (15 @ 13.2ppg) made major contributions to the winning effort. Lightning put up a challenge in the second and third quarters but seemed to run out of puff in the last quarter when they were outgunned 26-16. Evan Browne led the Lightning with 19 followed by Cameron Bailey (14), Jesse Bell & Tony Halikos (11 ea).

League Men – Warriors v Razzle

The Warriors broke back into the win column with a decisive 83-46 thumping of Razzle. A closely contested first half gave the Warriors a slim 34-31 lead over the green and gold, but after the break it was all Warriors as they lifted their defense to dominate the remainder of the game, out scoring their opponents 49-15 to complete the route. Warrior Jay Johnson (17.9ppg) hit a season high 39 with help from team mate Rob Oliver who had 15. For the undermanned Razzle Ross Vasic hit 13, Eric Klenke 12 and Boyd Hillebrand 10.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets 12-1-0, Ansett 8-2-3, Eagles 6-2-5, Uni Rebels 5-2-5, Warriors 3-2-8, Lightning 3-1-9, Razzle & 2-2-9
