League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Warriors

The Tracy Village Jets opened up their account in the first round of the DBA Championship Season with a sound 64-36 thrashing of the Warriors who are back on court after a couple of seasons away from the action. The Jets maintained the momentum they created during their successful Challenge Season championship last June and they appear to be focused on the challenge to take out this season’s competition as well. Keisha Tinley, Tara Maxwell and new recruit Brianna Grazioli all hit 12 points in leading the Bombers during the rout. The Warriors have put together a team that will have to take on the challenge of being the new kids on the block, although they have two players, Jennifer Kinsella (8.2ppg) and Jillian Pytko who did play with Ansett last season. The Jets came out blazing with a 20-10 first quarter run that set the tempo for the game and they never looked threatened during the match. Kinsella hit 13 for the Warriors and Caz Nyhouse had 11.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Ansett torched last year’s defending champions Uni Rebels 75-44. Samantha Drescher is back in town after a season with Kilsyth in the SEABL ‘D’ League where she placed 2nd in scoring with a 14.3ppg for 21 games, a total of 299pts. Sam was also second in rebounding with an 11.3 average per game. Sam hit 25 during the upset win against the Rebels, helped along with 12 each from Lauren Flanagan and Kate Hoschke. After a close first quarter the Blues put the game away with a 21-5 burst just before half time that left the Rebels floundering. They (Rebels) never recovered and after another onslaught in the third quarter when Flanagan and Hoschke entered the fray during a 25-8 run, the game was well and truly beyond their grasp. Justine Schmidt led the Rebels with 15 while Delsey Ah Wang and Vanessa Kurnoth added 10 each.

Lightning v Eagles

Lightning jumped all over a youngish looking Eagles outfit for a 61-42 opening season win. Both teams are fielding new look teams and a lot of juniors for this competition. Lightning’s youthful side has had more experience in League while the Eagles are missing most of their stating five from last season. The first quarter was all Lightning as they rattled off 20-7 points to put the Eagles behind the eight ball right from the get-go. Apart from the first and third quarters the Eagles played the Lightning even, but the initial burst from Lightning was all that was needed to ensure the win. Tahnee Lew Fatt led Lightning with 12 points while team mates Chelsea Cook and Kellie Sealy added 11 each. For the Eagles Rachel Watchorn hit 12.

Ladder:       Tracy Village, Ansett & Lightning 1-0, Uni Rebels, Eagles & Warriors 0-1

Next Week:                                    Tracy Village Jets v Eagles 6:15pm, Ansett v Lightning 7:45pm & Warriors v Uni Rebels 9:15pm

League MEN –Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

Tracy Village almost hit the ton as they rolled over the defending champs Uni Rebels 96-72. The Jets pumped in 22 first quarter points for a 22-14 lead and never looked back. The Bombers hit over 20 points in every quarter to open their account for the season. Point scoring machine Travis Ellis was in form with a game high 32 points followed by 25 from ever improving Nick Pattrick and 14 from Dan East who is back in town on summer vacation from school in the US of A. Guard Marcus Ch’ng led the Rebels with 21 with Matt Fagg (20) and new import Steve Waudby (19) putting up some good numbers, but not enough to catch up to the running Jets who are probably still smarting from not making the grand final in last season’s competition.

Eagles v Ansett

The Eagles flew past last season’s grand final runner-ups Ansett for a 59-43 victory, but it didn’t happen easily. The game was in the balance heading into the last quarter with the Eagles up 33-31. The Eagles, however, were first to react as they swooped in for the win with defense, holding the Blues to just 12 points for the quarter while notching up 26 big ones to ensure the win. Eagle Buster Perkins led all scorers with 17 while Louis Ilton added 14. Ilton is back in Darwin on holidays from school in the USA and his scoring and rebounding abilities are a bonus for the Eagles while he is in town. Cameron McKenzie and Tom Hunt led the Ansett attack with 11 points each while Tommy Blake added 9.

Lightning v Warriors

The Warriors flew out of the blocks in this round one matchup with Lightning to claim a 74-58 win. After last season’s dismal campaign the Warriors are looking to get back into the thick of it. Playing coach John Culbertsen led by example as he led a group of six Warriors to hit double figures. Culbertsen had 17, Rob Oliver & Travis Borsi 12 each, Christian Williams 11 & Rohan Cropley 10. Lightning trailed by only 4 at the half time break, 40-36, but got into all sorts of problems in the third quarter as they let the Warriors get away on a 15-9 run that gave them enough of a buffer to put the ‘w’ in the column. Cameron Bailey (19) and Dylan De Santis (10) were the only two to hit double figures for the Lightning.

Ladder:       Tracy Village Jets, Eagles & Warriors 1-0, Uni Rebels, Ansett & Lightning 0-1 & Razzle yet to open their account

Next Week:               Ansett v Warriors 6:15pm, Eagles v Uni Rebels 7:45pm, Lightning v  Razzle 9:15pm, Tracy Village Jets bye
