League Women –Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

Georgii Howlett hit a career high 34 points in leading the Tracy Village Jets past the Uni Rebels 75-45 for their fourth straight victory. Howlett has gone from strength to strength since arriving on the scene last year for the Jets and with the return of guard Jordan Ah Sam (9) the Bombers are looking good for this season’s campaign. Another returnee, Jaylene Bonson, has given the Rebels a bit of hope that they can get back on track for another shot at the title. Bonson was out with a dislocated finger and seems to have mended well as she led the Rebels with 22 points. The Rebels trailed by 5 after the first quarter (17-12) but failed to stay with the Jets in the second quarter during a 21-14 run that put the Jets up 38-26 at the half. Howlett took over in the second half, scoring 22 of her total to put the game out of reach for the Rebels. Demi Cubillo chipped in with 11 for the Jets while Jaylene Boundry hit 11 for the Rebels.

Ansett v Eagles

Ansett denied the Eagles 50-36 for their third win of the season, keeping them just one game out of first place. The Blues jumped out to a 16-10 first quarter lead that they extended out to 32-21 at the break, before coasting home with the win. Sam Drescher once again took charge of scoring for the Blues with a team high of 18 with support from Lauren Flanegan who dropped 11 (3 treys) and Olivia Birkett who hit 9. Lillian Williams and Donna Peters finished up with 8 each for the Eagles.

Warriors v Lightning

Lightning shut down the Warriors 49-44, but had to weather a couple of surges from the Warriors who are still looking for their first win. Lightning led 27-24 at the half time break due to some good work by Chelsea Cook (11) and Lucy Murry (15) who led the scoring for Lightning despite the efforts from Warriors Carolyn Nyhouse (18) and Kate Smyth (11). A 12-7 run in the third quarter, led by Cook, was just enough to see Lightning claim the points for the game. The Warriors were down by 12 early in the last quarter before out gunning Lightning 13-10 to bring the score back to respectability.

Ladder:       Tracy Village 4-0, Ansett 3-1, Uni Rebels & Lightning 2-2, Eagles 1-3 & Warriors 0-4

League MEN –Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

Young Eagle Henry Bui played the game of his life as he helped the Eagles edged past the Tracy Village Jets with a thrilling 87-86 victory. With less than a minute left in the game the outcome was in doubt until veteran Daniel Reid pulled off a steal from an inbounds Jets pass that he threw behind his back to Bui while falling out of bounds. Bui, who finished with a team high 22, made the basket to put the Eagles up by one point 85-84 before Jet Michael MacLean (14) responded with a basket to put the Jets up with only seconds remaining. After the inbounds Louis Ilton (18) passed the ball up court to Reidy who put up a bank shot with 1.5 seconds remaining to give the Eagles the win and a share of first place on the ladder. A long full court pass from MacLean to Travis Ellis (29) failed to register the go ahead points in a game that was a real crowd pleaser. Buster Perkins (16) and Joseph Johnson (14) lent plenty of support to the Eagle cause while Nick Pattrick (18), Liam MacLachlan & Clinton Kononen added 10 each for the Bombers.

Ansett v Lightning

Ansett kept a place at the top of the ladder with a demoralizing 111-57 victory against the winless Lightning. The return of power forward Rashad Chase was evident as he posted 31 points and double figures in rebounds in his first game of the season. The Blues raced away to a 29-9 first quarter lead and never looked back as Matt Hunt and Daniel Florance joined Chase on the offensive end of the match. Hunt and Florance hit 20 each followed by Tom Hunt with 17 and Jake Feeney with 14. Lightning never got into any rhythm during the contest although Cameron Bailey and Tom Godwin tried to match it with the Blues. By half time it was 59-19 and the writing was on the wall.

Uni Rebels v Warriors

Uni Rebels scored another impressive ton, their second in a row, as they hammered the Warriors 107-61 for win number three and a share of first place in the competition. Andre’ Moss almost racked up half a ton himself with a 42 point effort after last week’s DBA record 80. Steve Waudby added a season high 33 as the Rebels started fast and ended fast as they jumped out to a 25-10 first quarter lead. They never let up on offense and on defense let only one Warrior get into double figures and that was player coach John Culbertson who finished up with a team high 26, his best of the season. Matt Fagg from the Rebels also hit double figures, ending up on 19.

Ladder:       Ansett, Uni Rebels & Eagles 3-1, Tracy Village Jets 2-2, Warriors 1-3 & Lightning 0-4

Next Week:               Tracy Village Jets v Warriors 6:15pm, Ansett v Uni Rebels 7:45pm & Eagles v Lightning 9:15pm
