League Women –Uni Rebels v Ansett

The Uni Rebels continued their dominance over Ansett as they won the opening game of the Challenge Season against their rivals 78-68. Jaylene Bonson led the Rebels to victory with a team high 34 points that matched her counterpart from Ansett, Sam Drescher, who also hit 34. Bonson had just that little bit more support from her team mates that gave the Rebels the winning edge. Tamara Sheppard and newcomer Lucy Adams both hit 13 and Frances Clarke added 10. Apart from a second quarter lapse in scoring by Ansett the teams battled it out on equal footing. The Rebels stepped up their defense in the second quarter to outscore the Blues 21-11 and that 10 point buffer was all that was needed for the win. Vicki Uhlig and Olivia Birkett reached double figures for Ansett with 12 and 10.

Warriors v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets overwhelmed the Warriors 78-24 behind a 33 point effort from Georgii Howlett and 20 points from former Jet player Sam (Docherty) Rioli. Brianna Grazioli also chipped in with a double with 12pts. The Warriors put up little resistance from the Bomber onslaught as they fell behind 16-4 after the first quarter and only managed to hit one point in the second quarter to trail 37-5 at half time. The Jets hit 17pts from the charity stripe.

Lightning v Eagles

The Eagles extinguished the Lightning 85-30 to start off their campaign to regain their winning ways. With the return of mother/daughter team of Trish Graham and Michelle Friel the Eagles will be a more formidable challenge for opposing teams. The Eagles should benefit from their scoring abilities and all round court hustle, something that was missing last season. Lillian Williams notched up 26 points followed by Friel with 24, Graham 13 and Katherine Hollis with 10. Deearne Lee was the only Lightning player to hit double figures with 12. The half time score was 48-13.

Ladder:                               Uni Rebels, Eagles & Tracy Village Jets 1-0, Ansett, Lightning & Warriors 0-1

Next Week:                        Tracy Village Jets v Eagles 6:15pm, Warriors v Uni Rebels 7:45pm & Ansett v Lightning 9:15pm

League MEN –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The men from Tracy Village came out firing in their season opener to torch last season’s grand final runner up Ansett 89-56. Travis Ellis continues to be the ‘go to’ man for the Bombers and he didn’t disappoint as he nailed 30 points with team mates Michael MacLean and Liam Maclachlan backing him up with 17 and 12. The Bombers ran off 23-12 points in the first quarter to establish their authority on the game. However, Ansett did stage a brief resurgence in the second quarter, outscoring the Jets 18-11, but after the half time break the Bombers flew away from the Blues as Ellis hit his straps, scoring 21 of his total. Matt Hunt , Matthew Barrett & Jarrad Sheppard led the way for Ansett with 13, 12 and 10. Sheppard, who has transferred from the Uni Rebels, will add to the Blues firepower and defense, something that will be needed as they are without their two top scorers from last season in Daniel Florance and Rashad Chase who have moved interstate.

Lightning v Uni Rebels

Guard Marcus Ch’ng led from the front in the Uni Rebels 78-67 win over a scrappy Lightning outfit. Ch’ng not only directed traffic from the point, but put some points on the score board as well. He was supported gamely by vetean Jamie Hamill who had his biggest game in more than a few seasons, hitting 24 (including 5 of his trademark treys). Jake Kirby also put in a good game for the Rebels, adding 17 points, a career League high. Lightning slipped behind 19-11 after one quarter and struggled to make any inroads into the Rebel lead, although they did make a run at them in the third quarter when they outscored the Rebels 25-20, but it was too little too late. Jesse Bell continued on in his good form from last season to lead Lightning with 24 points with Tom Godwin adding 12 in support.

Eagles v Warriors

Buster Perkins (29) and Joseph Johnson (25) led the scoring for the Eagles as they stopped the Warriors 90-66 for an opening round win. The Eagles got a good start to the game with a 28-15 first quarter score line (13 from Johnson) and added to it before half time to lead 47-29. A huge lapse in defense by the Warriors in the third quarter let the Eagles get away for a 20-9 run that put the game out of reach. Larry Williams & Michael Pearce added 13 each for the Eagles while Phil Collins & Rob Oliver tallied 14 each for the Warriors and Josh Potter hit 10.

Ladder:                   Uni Rebels, Eagles & Tracy Village Jets 1-0, Ansett, Lightning & Warriors 0-1

Next Week:            Warriors v Ansett 6:15pm, Eagles v Uni Rebels 7:45pm & Lightning v Tracy Village Jets 9:15pm
