League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Tracy Village Jets and Eagles picked up from where they finished last season by matching up in the opening women’s game in the DBA Championship Season. The Jets proved too much to handle for the Eagles with the guard duo of Kylie Duggan and Sam Rioli scoring 55 points between them to lead the Bombers to a 74-61 win. Duggan hit a career league high of 32 points with Rioli adding 23. Only one point separated the two sides at half time 33-32 in favour of the Jets, but a third quarter 27-15 run by the Jets proved to be the difference in the end. Michelle Friel led the Eagles with 18 followed by 17 from Lillian Williams and 16 from Katherine Hollis.

Ansett v Lightning

New recruits Jacinda Lambert and Brittany Ward led Lightning to a comfortable 70-42 win over Ansett. Lambert nailed 17 points and Ward 15 as Lightning worked their way through some early nerves in the first quarter for a 11-10 lead before they hit their stride in the second quarter to stretch the lead out to 33-24 at the major break. Deearne Lee added to the scoring punch of Lightning in the second half, hitting 11 of her 13 points as Lightning tallied a total of 37 points to just 18 for Ansett in the third and fourth quarters to claim the win. Amelia Shanahan was high scorer for Ansett with 14.

Palmerston v Uni Rebels

Uni Rebels only suited up five players, but they did enough to claim a 59-29 win against the new look Palmerston team. The Palmerston side is mainly comprised of ex Warrior players who have merged with the Palmerston team. Both teams had a slow start to the game with the Rebels leading at half time 18-16 in the low scoring affair, but after the break the Rebels turned on the gas and powered away from the struggling Palmerston team. Lucy Adam (18) and Francis Fatanoha (16) combined for 27 second half points as the Rebels out scored Palmerston 41-13 to turn the game into a runaway win. Jennifer Kinsella led Palmerston with 12 while Delsey Ah Wang & Justine Schmidt added double figures for the Rebels with 12 & 11.

Ladder:                               Tracy Village Jets, Lightning & Uni Rebels 1-0, Eagles, Ansett & Palmerston 0-1

League Men –Tracy Village Jets v Razzle

Travis Ellis hit a whopping 39 points as the Tracy Village Jets overcame the Razzle 70-67 in a highly exciting game that put the recently finished Challenge season’s champs to the test. Ellis was the standout on the Jets team that didn’t have any other players in double figures. The Bombers had jumped out to a 15-10 first quarter lead that expanded to 38-27 at half time. They struggled, apart from Ellis, in the second half as the Razzle staged a comeback that almost claimed the points at the end of the game. The return of the green and gold to the League competition should, going on the result of this one game, provide added challenges to the rest of the teams in the comp. William Carroll top scored for the Razzle with 15 followed by Luke Kissick 13 and Cameron Mckenzie 11.

Lightning continued their good form from the Challenge Season to dump the Eagles 78-61 to open their account for this competition. Cameron Bailey and new acquisition Zac White each tallied 20 points to lead the way with Jesse Bell adding 18. The Eagles led at half time 30-28 but after the break Lightning charged ahead of the tiring Eagles to open up a 50-43 lead after three quarters of play. Lightning got on a roll in the third quarter as White nailed back to back treys during a 22-13 run that put the Eagles behind the eight ball with only a quarter to play. It was much the same in the fourth quarter with Bailey hitting 13 of his 20 during a 28-18 run that finished off the Eagles. Louis Ilton led the Eagles with 13 and Joseph Johnson and Timmy Duggan added 11 each.

Ansett got up over the Uni Rebels 69-54 with a very balanced team effort that had only one player in double figures…Matt Hunt with 11. The Rebels jumped out to a 19-11 first quarter lead behind the shooting of Marcus Ch’ng (18) and Jarrod Sheppard (19), but from that point onward it was all Ansett. The Blues got their stuff together and ramped up their defensive effort to pile on 58 points to 35 for the remainder of the game. Bryce Whitaker (9), Jake Feeney (9) and Chris Dunlop (8) added their efforts to that of Hunt to help Ansett to their first win of the season.

Ladder:                   Tracy Village Jets, Lightning & Ansett 1-0, Eagles, Razzle & Uni Rebels                                 0-1

Next Week:                Uni Rebels v Razzle 6:15pm, Ansett v Eagles 7:45pm & Tracy Village   Jets v Palmerston, bye: Lightning
