League Women –Ansett v Lightning

Ansett dispatched Lightning 58-43 as Sam Drescher and Amelia Shanahan combined for a whopping 50 points during the rout. Drescher and Shanahan both hit 25pts during the encounter to give the Blues sole possession of second place on the ladder after 7 rounds of play. Stat wise there wasn’t much between the two sides apart from the 31% shooting from the field by the Blues to just 20% for Lightning. The Blues took an early 19-10 lead and kept building on that for the rest of the game. Emma Carbone hit 12 for Lightning with Deearne Lee grabbing 12 rebounds along with 7 points, but there was no stopping the Blues duo of Drescher and Shanahan who also hauled down 33 boards between them.

Palmerston v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels won their second game of the season with a 55-42 effort against Palmerston. Palmerston had jumped out to a 13-11 first quarter lead, but that evaporated in the second stanza as the Rebels regrouped and charged forward to lead by 7 at the half time break 26-19. The Rebels put in another strong effort in the third quarter with a 13-9 run for a 39-28 lead with a quarter to go. They were never headed or in trouble after that. Jaylene Boundry led all scorers with a team high 16 for the Rebels with Jaylene Bonson adding 10. Reina Shean led Palmerston with 11.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

Forfeit win to Tracy Village Jets 20-0 as Eagles failed to field a team.

League Men – Eagles v Lightning & v Ansett

The Eagles enjoyed the weeked with two wins from two outings. They thumped Lightning 109-54 on Friday night and then bumped off Ansett 76-57 on Saturday. Shondale Robinson hit a league and season high 47 in the win over Lightning. He did it through 49% shooting from the field and added 16 rebounds. Eagle Chris Stewart was impressive on the boards hauling down a record 35, 19 of them on the offensive end. Joseph Johnson chipped in with 20 and Jesse Williams-Hook 13. Cameron Bailey was best for Lightning with 22 points.

On Saturday night the Birds beat Ansett behind the shooting of Robinson and Williams-Hook who teamed up for 53 points between them. The Blues held a narrow 20-18 first quarter lead due to some inspired play from Daniel Florance who hit 9 of his team high 29. The Eagles, however grabbed the momentum in the second quarter during a 24-12 run led by Robinson who chalked up 11 of his game high 34. The Blues clawed it back to 54-49 after three quarters of play, but the Birds stepped it up again in the last quarter during a 22-8 run that put the game out of reach of Ansett. The Eagles hit 45% from the field to the Blues 27%.

Tracy Village Jets v Razzle & v Palmerston

The Tracy Village Jets also enjoyed a good weekend of wins, taking a close one 71-66 against the Razzle on Friday night and then taking out the Saturday night fixture against Palmerston 67-56. The Friday game was fairly close throughout with the Jets holding a 60-51 lead heading into the last quarter. Razzle lifted and they got within 4 points at 66-62 when Ben Cowcher hit a bucket with 4:14 left in the game, but that was the last gasp as the Bombers dug in and held on for the win. Newcomer Brendan Dell for Razzle led all scorers with 25 with help from Cowcher who hit 16. For the winning Bombers Liam MacLachlan had 20, Alex Weetra 15, Jake Geer 12 and Michael MacLean 10.

On Saturday MacLachlan was the ‘go to’ guy again leading the Bombers with a game and season high 31. The Jets led 30-26 at the half time break and extended that out to a 16 point buffer after a 26-14 run during the third quarter. Aaron Simpson gave Palmerston a little hope in the last quarter, scoring 6 of his team high 16, but the challenge was held off by the Jets who notched up their 7th win of the competition.  

Uni Rebels v Ansett & v Razzle

The Rebels split their games, going down to Ansett and winning against the Razzle.

Daniel Florance and Matt Hunt led Ansett to their one success over the weekend an 85-65 win against the Rebels on Friday night with Florance scoring a game high 28 and Hunt 21. Florance also added 10 rebounds and 3 assists to his figures while shooting at an impressive 48% from the field. The Blues flew out to a 19-13 first quarter lead and added significantly in each of the next two quarters to head into the last quarter with a comfortable 67-44 lead. Four players hit double figures for the Rebels, but only 5 scored at all. Jake Kirby led the lot with 19 followed by Simon Hamill & Marcus Ch’ng with 14 each and Aldrin Moday with 11.

The Rebels bounced back on Saturday with an easy 79-49 win over the Razzle. Jake Kirby was in fine form hitting a season and game high 27. Kirby did it on 79% shooting from the field. He missed 3 of 14 shots while hitting 100% from the free throw line and 100% from outside the arc (3of3). He had support from Aldrin Moday 18, Marcus Ch’ng 16 and Simon Hamill 14. Brendan Dell stood out for the Razzle with 17. The Rebels hit 49% from the field to Razzle’s 31%.
