League Women Round 17 – Ansett v Lightning

Kymira Woodberry hit 11 of her game high 31 points in the first quarter to lead the Lightning to a 72-44 win against Ansett. The Blues had no one who could slow down Woodberry as she continued her assault on the hoop. She added 12 more points in the second quarter as the Lightning raced away to a 31-22 lead at half time. Elizabeth Paice and Tamiyah Perkins worked hard at trying to stay in touch with the Lightning, but the Blues slipped even further behind after the break to trail 54-31 heading into the fourth and final quarter. Ashley Walsh and Yasmin DeCurtains started firing in the last quarter in support of Woodberry leaving no chance for the Blues to get back into the contest. Walsh finished up with 13 points and DeCurtains had 10 for the Lightning while Paice hit a season high 19 and Perkins chipped in with 11 for the Blues.

League Men – Ansett v Palmerston

In an exciting finish to the DBA Challenge Season the Blues from Ansett have snatched the minor premiership from both the Eagles and the Lightning on a match ratio basis. The Blues won their match against Palmerston easily running out winners 92-54. Matthew Van Pelt continued his fine shooting form, notching up a game high 27 with team mates Jake Feeney adding a personal season high of 24 and Matt Hunt adding 17. Van Pelt and Feeney led a concerted first quarter charge that gave the Blues a 24-12 lead that they never relinquished. The Blues held a 42-24 half time lead that they just kept adding to as the game progressed, outscoring the Power 50-30 in the second half. Robert Wilson led the Power with 19 and Bradley Jachmann hit 10. The Blues would dearly love to get back to the big dance as they have faltered at the Grand Final stage in the last two seasons of play, losing to the Jets in last year’s Challenge Season and then falling by the wayside in the Championship Season last December to the Eagles.

Razzle v Eagles

James Silvie set a new game high for the season with a haul of 50 points in the Eagles 93-53 win against the Razzle. Silvie nailed 9 treys (27pts) in his total as the Birds went on a scoring rampage against the green and gold. In all there were 20 three pointers made between the two sides during the match. The Eagles only held a slim 20-16 lead after one quarter of play but kicked up the pressure with a 26-11 run in the second quarter for a 46-27 lead at the major break. The second half was much the same as the Birds claimed their 10th win of the season. William McClay from the Razzle hit 6 treys in his 27 point haul and Ben Cowcher hit 10, but there wasn’t much support after that as the Razzle record fell to 1-13 for the season and left them out of the playoffs. Jesse Williams-Hook helped the Eagle cause with 17.

Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets bounced back from a defeat by the Uni Rebels last Saturday to claim a 103-96 victory over the Rebels last night that provides the Bombers with a huge morale boost heading into the playoffs next Friday night. Darrin Weetra was on fire hitting a team high 35. He had help from Alex Weetra with 26 and Sam White with 19. The Bombers were down 43-41 at half time as the Rebel Tim Morris put on a show from the field. Morris hit 24 of his game high 49 points in the first half. If Morris hadn’t been firing away the Rebels would have been in dire straits. Despite the actions of Morris the Bombers kept coming and in the second half Darrin Weetra hit a purple patch, hitting 30 of his total during the half. It wasn’t until the last quarter that the Bombers finally managed to get out in front of the Rebels and hang on for the win.

Ladder after Round 16:                 Ansett 10-4, Lightning 9-4, Eagles 10-5, Uni Rebels 8-6, Tracy Village Jets 6-7, Palmerston 4-7 & Razzle 1-13 – Match ratio

6 June Semi-finals:     Ansett v Lightning 6:15pm, Eagles v Uni Rebels 7:45pm & Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston 9:15pm
