League Women – Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The Tracy Village Jets rolled over Ansett 80-31 for their seventh win in a row (extending back into last season’s Challenge Season). Twenty-five points from Abby Cubillo was almost enough to beat the Blues single handedly, but support was needed and it came from Danielle Totham who hit 18 and Tiarni Don who added 10. The Bombers flew off to a 29-3 first quarter lead and the Blues never recovered from the shock. Temiyah Perkins put up 9 points and Liz Paice 7, but the Blues just don’t have the firepower to contend with any of the front runners at the moment.

Lightning v Eagles

Lillian Williams knocked down 22 points to lead the Eagles to their first win of the competition, a closely contested 49-45 victory over the Lightning. Michelle Friel added 18 as the Birds put one up in the win column. Lightning looked set to pick up their first win as they bolted out to a 28-20 half time lead behind the good shooting of Yasmin DeCurtins and Ashlee Walsh. However, the Eagles turned the tables in the second half, outscoring Lighting 29-17 to fly home the winners. The game was won from the free throw line and the Eagles made the most of their chances as the Lightning scrambled to gain possession of the ball as time wound down. DeCurtins finished up with 16 points to lead the Lightning.

Ansett v Palmerston Power

League Men – Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

The Uni Rebels put up a barrage of three pointers to down the Tracy Village Jets 87-72. A total of 16 treys adding up to 48 points paved the way for victory with John King leading the way on 37 points of which 7 were from outside the arc. Tim Morris chipped in with 21 points (including 4 treys) and Matt Fagg had 18 (also 4 treys). The Jets had their chances, but never fully recovered from a 30-16 first quarter run by the Rebels that set up enough of a buffer that carried through to the end. Court captain Michael MacLean led the Jets with 17, Alex Weetra had 16 and Darrin Weetra hit 14.

Razzle v Palmerston

Palmerston is looking more like a contender in this year’s race to the finals as they made easy work of the Razzle. They knocked off the green and gold 73-43, a win that puts them into a two way tie for first place on the ladder after two rounds of play. A 12-5 run in the first quarter followed up by a 24-13 second quarter spurt put the Razzle squarely behind the eight ball at half time 36-18. David Carroll was alone in double figures for the Razzle, who are sorely missing some scoring firepower. The Power didn’t have that lack of scoring. Brad Jachmann hit a game high 24 followed by Bayi Handy with 15, Jarrod Forsdick 12 and Timmy Duggan 10.

Lightning v Ansett

Lightning bolted home in the second half to sneak past Ansett 61-57 for their first Championship Season win. The Lightning had to stage a come-back to pull out the win, but they scrambled their way back from defeat to pip the Blues with a big last quarter rally. Matteo Rowse led the first half charge by the Blues as they fired up to take a 27-19 half time lead and looked prepared to get on with the business of winning a game. However, after the break the Lightning stormed back into contention with an 18-12 third quarter run that left them trailing by just two points 39-37 with one quarter to play. Lightning finally overhauled the Blues midway through the last quarter from the charity stripe and went on to claim the points. Harry Fuge led Lightning with 17 and Cameron Bailey added 13 while Rowse from the Blues led all scorers with 22. Cooper Ehmer lent support to Rowse with 14 and Tom Hunt 10.

Ladder after Round 2:                                   Uni Rebels & Palmerston 2-0, Tracy Village Jets & Lightning 1-1, Eagles 1-0, Razzle 0-2 and Ansett 0-1,

Next week Round 3:  Palmerston Power v Tracy Village Jets 6:15pm, Razzle v Ansett 7:45pm & Uni Rebels v Eagles 9:15pm. Lightning have the bye
