League Women – Ansett v Eagles

The Eagles pipped Ansett at the post 51-49, but they had to stage a come-back to do it. Ansett took off in the first quarter on a 15-2 run leaving the Birds in their exhaust fumes struggling. However, after a hard look at what needed to be done to get back in the game the Eagles got on with the job of defense and put in a 16-11 run in the second quarter to trail by just 8 points at the break 26-18. Another run of 16-9 in the third quarter saw the Birds get within 1 point at 35-34 heading into the last quarter. Eagle Trish Graham kick started the final quarter with a three pointer and the Birds were away on a 17-14 run that culminated in the win. Faye Armstrong put in her best game of the season with a team high 14 followed by Graham & Lillian Williams with 11 each and Michelle Friel with 10. Ashton Eaton led the Blues with 25 and Sam Drescher added 15.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

The Tracy Village Jets had no problem in dispatching the Lightning 71-25 as they prepare for the upcoming playoffs in two weeks. Abby Cubillo, Sam Rioli and Erin Geer set up the win with 22 points, 17 and 13. After a close first quarter (15-13 Jets) the Jets took off on a 20-2 run in the second term to put the game out of reach of the Lightning. The Bombers led 35-15 at the half and things did not get any better for the Lightning in the second half. Ashley Walsh & Kelly Doherty led the Lightning with 6 apiece.

League Men – Palmerston Power v Uni Rebels

Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson had his best outing of the season in leading the Palmerston Power to a narrow 99-95 win in overtime against the Uni Rebels. Hohipa-Wilson (13.1ppg) hit a season high 34 points during the encounter knocking the Rebels out of first place on the ladder. The Power trailed 61-56 at the start of the last quarter and it was Aaron Simpson who played a big part in the come from behind victory. Simpson hit all of his 7 points in the last quarter from the charity stripe…two of them at the end of the quarter that ensured an 80-80 tie at the end of regulation time. The last points put up by the Rebels to end the quarter was a three pointer from Tim Morris (29.2ppg) who finished with a team and game high 48, but it wasn’t the winning points and the two teams went into OT to decide the winner. Hohipa-Wilson finished off the game with 15 of 19 points in the OT for the win. Others in double figures for the Power were Mitchell Mudi (18 @ 11ppg), Deba George (14) and 10 apiece to Brad Jachmann & Tendayi Muyambi. Morris had help from Matt Fagg (12) and David Ronchi (11).

Ansett v Eagles

The Eagles took advantage of their 81-69 win over Ansett and the loss by the Uni Rebels to the Power to grab first place on the ladder for the first time this season. The Eagles had to stage another come from behind win as in their two previous wins. The Birds led 39-35 at half time thanks to the shooting of Louis Ilton, James Silvie and Reece Turner. But after the break Ansett got on a roll behind the league’s leading scorer Donte Nicholas (35.5ppg) and Cooper Ehmer as the Blues rattled off 19 points to just 13 for the Eagles to take a 54-51 lead and momentum going into the last quarter. The Birds flew away in the last quarter with a 28-15 run led by Chris Hart (26ppg) who hit 15 of his team high 32. Nicholas led all scorers with 35 while team mate Matteo Rowse had 15. Hart had support from Turner (17ppg) with 17, Ilton with 14 and Silvie with 12.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning-

The Jets dropped the Lightning 93-88 in the first overtime game of the night. It wasn’t until the end of the third quarter that the Bombers finally stuck their noses in front of the close contest to lead 65-63 following a 25-18 run ignited by Darrin Weetra (16.6ppg) and Jayden Adams. Then in the last quarter the Lightning came through in flying colours with a 21-19 run set up by a couple of treys by Steven Ting to tie the game up in regulation, forcing the OT. But the Jets wrestled back the momentum behind Alex Weetra (12ppg) and Liam MacLachlan (8.9ppg) to run out winners, outscoring the Lightning 9-4. MacLachlan led the Jets with 28, Darrin Weetra had 27 and Alex Weetra hit 16. For the Lightning Cameron Bailey (13.6ppg) hit 28, Craig Martin 25 @ 16.6ppg, Ting 12 and Thomas Godwin 10.
