Round 13

League Women Thursday – Eagles v Lightning

Trish Graham once again powered up in the second half to ignite another Eagle come from behind 52-48 victory, this time against the upset minded Lightning who always seem to turn in a good game against the Birds. Graham hit 17 of her game high 24 points in the second half as the Birds struggled to get on top of the Lightning. Lightning had posted a 17-16 first half lead led by Yasmin De Curtains (8.1ppg) and by the end of the third quarter that had increased to 31-27. Luckily for the Eagles Graham (13.8ppg) played her part during a 25-17 run in a last quarter resurgence to help the Birds across the line. A big factor for the Birds was their accuracy from the charity stripe…they hit 17 free throws to just 6 for the Lightning (9 from Graham alone). Support for Graham came from Lillian Williams (9.8ppg) & Faye Armstrong (7.9ppg) who had 11 each. For the Lightning De Curtis finished up with 13 and Alison Fleming & Kira Pendlebury tallied 9 apiece.

Uni Rebels v Ansett

Ansett pulled off a minor round upset of the Uni Rebels with a solid 53-41 win to tighten their grip on a playoff berth. Ansett’s Clancy Dorman was on fire from outside the arc, nailing seven treys in her game high 23 points. Dorman leads the League with 36 three pointers (108pts) so far this season. Dorman helped the Blues build up a 28-22 half time lead and with the help of Elizabeth Paice they powered away in the second half by outscoring the Rebels 25-19 for the victory. The Rebels kept the game close, but couldn’t close the gap and with each quarter the Blues just added to their buffer and won comfortably in the end. Paice finished with 15 while Ambah Kowcun & Edith Boundry shared scoring honours for the Rebels with 11 each.

Razzle v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets ran their undefeated streak out to 20 as they dominated the Razzle 75-32. Four players hit double figures for the Bombers with Tikesa Docherty-Cole leading the parade with 25, Danielle Totham 12 and Sam Rioli & Rachael Park potting 10 each. The first quarter was a 10 all draw, but after that the Bombers ripped the game wide open with a run of 23-8 for a half time lead of 33-18…game over. For the Razzle Erin Boyd continued her fine form with a team high 18.

Make-up game between Eagles & Lightning: Eagles 44 Lightning 32

The Eagles picked up two wins this week with another win over the Lighting 44-32 in a make-up game on Saturday night. Eagle Lillian Williams led all scorers with 17 and she had solid back up from Michelle Friel who returned after a back injury caused her to miss the last three weeks for the Birds. Friel added 12 points. Yasmin De Curtins set the pace for the Lighting with 16, but she was the only scorer in double figures. The win by the Birds put them into second place on the ladder with a one game advantage over the Uni Rebels. Next week’s Friday night game should be a ripper as the teams meet again.

League Men Thursday –Uni Rebels v Eagles

Brad Jachmann (13.5ppg) and Tyler Jefferson (24.4ppg) combined their talents to lead the Uni Rebels to a 70-61 win over the Eagles on Thursday night ensuring top spot on the ladder for another week. Jackmann and Jefferson staked the Rebels to a handy 39-25 half time lead and put a lot of pressure on the Eagles to respond. By the end of the third quarter the Birds trailed by only 2pts at 51-49 thanks to an explosion of points from Deola Folarin (32.7ppg) who finished with a game high 24, unfortunately for the losing side. After another momentum shift the Rebels went on a 19-12 run in the fourth quarter to capture the win. Jackmann hit 19, Jefferson 17, Jake Kirby 16 and Lionel Oger 12. Dirk Steenbergen (13.2ppg) had 14 and Reece Turner 12 @ 14.7ppg for the Eagles who are now three full games behind the Rebels.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

New recruit Jesse Bell led the Tracy Village Jets to a comprehensive 86-67 win over the previously second placed Lightning and in doing so the Bombers took over sole possession of second place on the ladder. Bell hit a game high 29 with Travis Ellis contributing 27, Michael MacLean 12 and Darrin Weetra 11. The Bombers are going from strength to strength and with the addition of a bona fide scorer in Bell are now a real threat to take out the big one at the end of the season. Ellis hit 21 first half points to put the Bombers into a commanding 43-29 lead and after the break they continued on in the same vein running out easy winners. Craig Martin hit 14, Cameron Bailey 13 and Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson added 11 for the Lightning. The Jets have only lost one game in their last 10!

Ansett v Razzle

The Razzle dumped Ansett 78-42 for only their third win of the season. Rob Oliver and David Carroll combined for 37pts to lead the Razzle charge and they made their intention known after a devastating second quarter when they pulled away from the Blues during a 27-12 run for a 45-28 half time lead. Things got worse for the Blues in the second half as they could only manage 14 points to the Green & Golds 33. Oliver ended up with a game high 19, Carroll 18, Ben Cowcher 12 and William McClay 10. For the Blues Matteo Rowse hit 16.
