Round 8

League Women – Tracy Village Jets v Razzle

The Tracy Village Jets handed the Razzle their eighth straight loss of the Championship Season leaving them firmly entrenched at the bottom of the ladder. The emphatic 96-44 win has the Jets sitting on top of the ladder with a 7-1 record after eight rounds of play. Tania Dhu put the Jets on the road to victory with a bucket after just 18 seconds of play and the rout was on. Six Jet players hit double figures with Abby Cubillo collecting the lions share with 20, Kylie Duggan had 15, Sam Rioli 12 (16.7ppg) and Dhu, Danielle Totham & Frances Fatnowna all nailed 10. For the unlucky Razzle Caitlin Wortlehock had 15 and Erin Boyd had 13.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

Ansett wasted no time in gaining the upper hand in their upset 60-47 win against the second placed Uni Rebels. The Blues came out firing as they went on a 25-8 first quarter shooting spree that left the Rebels reeling. The Rebels never recovered as the Blues sent them down to just their third loss of the competition. Ashton (21.2ppg) continued her fine form to lead the Blues with a team high 21 and she had able support from Kisha Lee (16) and Tamara Sheppard (11). The only player in double figures for the Rebels was their leading scorer Ambah Kowcun (19.2ppg) with a game high 26.

Eagles v Lightning

The latest recruit for the Eagles, Jasmine Stovall, made her presence felt on court for the Birds. Stovall hit 23 points in support of Trish Graham (18.3ppg) who potted a game high 26 as the Birds swooped past the Lightning 83-38. It was a timely win for the Eagles as they were struggling to find more scoring from within the team. The addition of Stovall, who plays the guard spot, will definitely give the Eagles a boost for the remainder of the season. The Birds put up 21 first quarter points to 11 for the Lightning and then blew them away in the second quarter with a 25-3 run. Alexia Hohipa-Wilson chipped in with 13. Emma Carbone (10.8ppg) was the lone standout for the Lightning with 14.

League Men – Uni Rebels v Eagles

The Uni Rebels kept the Eagles at bay by staging a second half come-back to hold out the Birds 79-68. Tyler Jefferson (24.6ppg) and Marcus Ch’ng (17.7ppg) were the prime movers for the Rebels in the last quarter when the Eagles tried to scramble back into the lead. After leading by just 1pt at half time the Birds got into an ever changing score-line as the Rebels kept pressing for the lead. They (Rebels) finally got the lead heading into the last quarter. The Rebels were up 61-55 at the start of the quarter. Eagle Ernest Holms hit a bucket to get the Birds within 4 but that was as close as they got for the remainder of the game as the Rebels grabbed the momentum and rode it home to victory. Jefferson hit a game high 27, Ch’ng 19 and Jake Kirby 10. Deola Folarin had 19 and Reece Turner 18 @ 23.1ppg for the Eagles.

The Power won every quarter but the last one, but had enough of a buffer to claim the points. It wasn’t a stroll in the park as both sides put players on the charity stripe throughout the game. King hit 14pts from the free throw line. The Power led 21-15 at the end of one quarter, 43-32 at the half and just maintained enough during the second half to win. Hohipa-Wilson led all scorers with 33, Jesse Bell added 15 and Tom Godwin 10. King finished up with 31 for the Blues with Joseph Stewart on 17 and Zach Hunt 10.

Tracy Village Jets v Lightning

The League’s leading scorer, Craig Martin (26ppg) from the Lightning, slammed home 32pts as the Lightning overcame the Tracy Village Jets 83-70 to slip past the Bombers into third place on the ladder. The third quarter proved pivotal for the Lightning as they blew past the Jets 25-11 to give themselves enough of a lead to finish up with their fourth win of the season.
