Round 13

League Women – Razzle v Tracy Village Jets (Thursday)

The Tracy Village Jets steamrolled the Razzle 109-45 for their twelfth victory of the season. Captain Sam Rioli posted her highest tally for the competition, dropping in a game high 32 which takes her season average out to 17.08ppg making her fourth best in the category. The first quarter was no indication of what was about to happen to the Razzle in the next two quarters. They only trailed by 7 at 24-17 but the second quarter turned into a blow-out as the Jets roared by the Razzle 31-4, at one stage scoring 16 straight unanswered points. At half time the score was 55-21 and the third quarter was almost a carbon copy of the second as the Jets rammed home their dominance with a 34-10 run. Rioli got plenty of help from Kylie Duggan (13.8ppg) who turned in another solid performance with 26pts and Chloe Purvis and Delsey Ah Wang with 13 each. Erin Boyd stood out for the Green & Gold with a team high 21 (10.4ppg). The stage is now set for a barn burner next week Friday as the Jets match up against second place Ansett.

Eagles v Lightning

The Eagles came out firing in the first quarter, throwing out the challenge to Lightning early as the Birds rolled to a 64-46 victory. Jasmine Stovall started it all with a three pointer as the Birds ran off 10 unanswered points on their way to a 15-4 lead. Lightning pulled back a few points in the second quarter to trail at the half 28-20. The Eagles dropped in a quick five points to start the third quarter and again limited the Lightning scoring opportunities to run off 16 points to 8 for a winning 44-28 lead heading into the last frame. Alysha-Marie Williams hit a game high 17 for the Eagles with 14 from Trish Graham, 11 from Jasmine Stovall & 10 from Faye Armstrong. Sarah Clee & Kira Pendlebury both tallied 10 for the Lightning.

Uni Rebels v Ansett

Ansett held the Uni Rebels to their lowest scoring output for the competition with a decisive 62-35 win. The Rebels charged out to a slim 14-13 first quarter lead, but that disappeared quickly in the second quarter as the Blues began to assert their control on the game. After Ashton Eaton hit the go ahead bucket for a 17-16 lead 3 minutes into the quarter the Blues ran off 12 points to five to take a 25-19 lead at the half and never let the Rebels back into the game. Eaton finished up with 15, Tamara Sheppard 14 and Kisha Lee 12 while Ambah Kowcun was the lone standout in double figures for the Rebels with 14.

Men Round 14

League Men – Palmerston Power v Lightning (Thursday)

Palmerston scored 8 unanswered points in the last 1:50 to snatch a hard fought 75-66 win over the Lightning. The game was up for grabs with two minutes to play and Lightning was looking forward to claiming a win to help celebrate Cameron Bailey’s milestone 300th League game. But it was not to be as the Power shut them out completely after Lightning’s Lachlan Edwards hit a bucket to get them within one point at 67-66 with 1:49 to go. Throughout the game neither side could build up a big enough buffer that was going to be decisive. They traded the lead a number of times until that last minute momentum shift to the Power. Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson, Jesse Bell and Tom Godwin did most of the damage for the Power in the last quarter. The foul count didn’t favour the Lightning either as the Power made 25 points off of freebies from the charity stripe to just 9 for the Lightning. The Power’s Jesse Bell (19.6ppg) made 13 of his 19 points from the line. Hohipa-Wilson (18ppg) also tallied 19 while Godwin (10.7ppg) nailed 17 and Ben Streeter 12. Craig Martin (24.1ppg) took scoring honours for the Lightning with 19 and Bailey (16.1ppg) added 13.

Ansett v Eagles

Ansett knocked off the Eagles 83-75 for their third win in a row and with the win shot into fourth place on the ladder with a better percentage than the Tracy Village Jets. A great start from the Blues in the first half gave them an almost unreachable 50-34 lead over the Eagles thanks to Joseph Stewart (9.9ppg) and John King (20.1ppg). The Birds put in a strong third quarter challenge through James Smith, Henry Bui and Reece Turner, but still trailed by 10 going into the fourth quarter. The Blues regained a bit of control in the fourth and despite losing the quarter 16-18 still had the resolve to come out winners. With just four rounds to go both sides will be hoping to consolidate a position in the final four as there are still four teams vying for a spot. Stewart had a team high 23, King 21 and Matteo Rowse & Fred Webb 12 each. For the Eagles Ernest Holmes (14.1ppg) hit 23, Smith & Bui 14 each and Turner 11.

Uni Rebels v Razzle

The Uni Rebels used an explosive second quarter outburst of points to overpower the Razzle 103-57 for their eleventh win of the season. The league leading Rebels were ahead by just the single point after one quarter of play 20-19, but the second quarter changed the whole complex of the game. The Rebels racked up 32 points to just 6 and the game was pretty much out of reach for the Razzle who now trailed by 27 points at 52-25 at the break. Five players hit double figures for the Rebels with Marcus Ch’ng (19.5ppg) leading the way with 30, Thomas Uppena 20 @ 13.1ppg, Jake Kirby 17, Lionel Oger 12 and Tyler Jefferson 10. Rob Oliver (13.5ppg) popped in 23 for the Razzle with Bronson Smith 12 and Nathan Radonich 10 lending support.
