Triple Overtime!!  Lightning survived a battle royal against the Warriors to come out on top 69-66 in a physically draining triple overtime that saw the Lightning finish off the game with only four players left to contest the game.  The biggest lead of the game was 8pts early in the first quarter, but the Warriors scrapped back to trail by 10-13 going into the second and from then on neither team had more than a 4pt break.  The Warriors had their first win in their grasp with only 9 seconds left in regulation and a 46-44 lead only to have Claire O’Bryan (25) steal the ball and drive almost the length of the court to nail a layup to tie the game up at 46 all in regulation.  The first overtime ended in another tie up at 55 all and the second would have gone Lightning’s way but for a full court pass from Rebecca Hall (11) to Peta Bailey (20) who drilled a shot off the backboard as the siren sounded.  At this stage of the game Lightning had been reduced to only four players on court as O’Bryan and Brooke Hynes had fouled out.  Tahnee Lew Fatt was injured, but stayed at the defensive end for Lightning to help out on defence.  So Lightning was basically a three man team consisting of Tamara Sheppard (28), Lauren Sealy and Alana Dingo.  Try as they might the Warriors just couldn’t finish off Lightning and when playmaking guard Hall left the third overtime injured the red and whites succumbed to the relentless drive of the trio who carried the day for the Lightning.

Competition leader Eagles staged a comeback against Ansett to remain undefeated with a narrow 50-47 win.  Ansett came out running and gunning to grab a early 7pt lead before the Eagles put together a few baskets to close the gap to 7-12 at the end of the first quarter.  Despite a game high 22 from Samantha Drescher and a season high of 13 from Danette Lee the Eagles kept chipping away at Ansetts lead to be within one point at the half 22-23.  The fourth quarter was set to wind up as a nail biter as the Eagles took a 39-38 lead after a 17-15 run thanks to some solid defence from Leonie Snowdon who held Drescher to only 2pts for the quarter.  Drescher lit up again in the fourth quarter scoring 7 of Ansetts 9 but it wasn’t enough to offset the input from Greta Hollis (15), Sarah Hagan and Trish Graham (8 each) who helped to wrap it up for the Eagles despite a few tense moments near the end when Ansett had opportunities, but committed a few unforced errors.

Uni Rebels ran away from the Razzle with a 21-7 first quarter outburst that led to an 81-42 win.  Frances Clarke and Delsey Ah Wang combined for 43 of the Rebel output with Edith and Jaylene Boundry putting together 22 between them.  Razzle put up more opposition during a 21-15 third quarter run, but the Rebels lifted again in the last quarter to blow past the Razzle with another big run, 28-4, to seal the game.  Lucy Adam top scored for the green and gold with 13.

Men

Ansett grabbed a share of first place on the mens ladder with a 36-30 upset of the Eagles.  The low scoring affair was indicative of the bruising hard fought battle between the two sides with neither team giving away anything.  Ansett was unforgiving with their ‘in your face’ defence limiting the number of open looks at the basket for the Eagles while sharing the ball around amongst themselves on offence (nobody scored in double figures for Ansett).  Nick Feeney relished the clash inside the keyway against his Eagle counterparts, keeping the ball alive for Ansett and gathering in double figure rebounds for the Blues while notching up a team high 9pts.  Earl Nurse had the job of containing high scoring centre Lucas Tanis from the Eagles whom he kept to just 11pts.  Daniel Florence (7) showed no fear in taking the ball to the hoop against an Eagle side seemingly reluctant to put up any shots of their own when the opportunity presented itself.

The Warriors got their first taste of winning this season with a 70-53 win against the fourth placed Lightning.  New recruit Jim Cocklan (14) from Michigan, USA (Mt. Gambier, Victoria here in Australia) helped Jarrod Sheppard to control the tempo from the point guard position as the Warriors shared the points around, three players in double figures and everyone on the team getting into the scoring column.  After an even first quarter the Warriors lifted their intensity to break away for a 32-21 half time lead and never looked back, although the Lightning stayed within striking distance.  John Culbertson and Sheppard backed up Cocklans effort with 14 and 16 while Mark Lloyd was the only Lightning player in double figures with 11.

Razzle also won their first game of the competition as they outlasted the yet to win Uni Rebels 70-62.  Big centre Kyle Webb (13) led five players who hit double figures and he hauled in some pretty critical rebounds down the stretch as the Razzle fought off a scrappy Rebel side intent on getting a win.  Simon Hamill (15) and brother Jamie (14) combined for 29 points as they tried to get the struggling Rebels a win.  Razzle started out like gangbusters with a 25-11 first quarter in what looked likely to be a blowout, but the Rebels regrouped and finished the second quarter with back to back three pointers to reclaim some lost ground, but after the break it was almost level pegging as Razzle did just enough to maintain their advantage for their first win.
