Kids tryathlon a huge success

2012’s Queens Birthday celebrations saw the start of an exciting new addition to the sporting calendar in Solomon Islands, the Weetbix Kids TRYathlon.

Friday’s triathlon was the first event of its kind held in Solomon Islands, and saw over 40 youngsters between the ages of 8 and 12 giving their all at Kakabona Beach, near Honiara.

While many people were sweltering in the sun at Lawson Tama Stadium during Friday’s Queen’s Birthday Celebrations, over 40 young competitors were doing it equally tough – but having a lot more fun – at Kakabona. The race saw the young triathletes swim 100 metres along the sunny shores of Kakabona, before mounting bikes for the three kilometre ride leg of the race. Bikes were then parked as each of the 50 competitors gave their best in the one kilometre run component of the triathlon.

Supported by Sanitarium Weetbix and the Oceania Triathlon Union (OTU) and organised by Triathlon Solomon Islands (TriSI), competitors had the chance to try the sport of triathlon in a fun, safe environment.

Race Director Leban Lokata said Friday’s Weetbix Kids TRYathlon was a great opportunity for kids to experience the sport of triathlon, and he was thrilled so many youngsters made the most of the fun morning.

“This is the first time a race of this kind has been held in Solomon Islands,” he said. “I’m very happy that so many young people have come down to try this fantastic, fun sport. By the smiles on everyone’s faces out there, it seems like they are too.”

All competitors at Friday’s Weetbix Kids Triathlon event received t-shirts and medallions for their efforts.
