Waverley Spring 2014 Round 2

Round 2 of the Spring season saw the 2's face up against the Runner's Up from the Autumn Season in Waverley Dist. This team beat us twice during the season 39-31 then 46-29. This game always had the potential to be a bit of a blow out for us. We also lost one of our rocks from GK in Tash Belo with her viral issues as well as Elise Dobson injuring her knee at school netball today. After a slow round 1, I saw some very encouraging signs at the LYVNA Tournament in that we were getting our rhythm back and playing as a team again. If this improvement was going to continue, I thought we'd be strong against last season's R/Up. Well I was proven right! All I can say about the first half of netball.... OUTSTANDING!! To be in front of the R/Up 34-13 at half time, our team work, goaling, defensive end and all around pressure was brilliant. We worked extremely hard all over the court and when a turnover did occur, we were able to switch very quickly from offensive mode to defensive mode. This created numerous turnovers all over the court. With a 21 goal lead, this enable me to 'experiment' a little with some positional changes. I did challenge the girls to make a statement to the rest of the section by extending our dominance. Maybe this was a error on my part, as we started to force the ball too quickly and go for shots, passes that maybe we normally wouldn't have taken. Having said that we did have players 'out of position' but continued to work hard. Although we lost the 2nd half by 8, winning 51-38, we were never really troubled and this was an ideal game for me to test the girls in other positions. Sammi Bullas moved from WA to WD, Abbey Marshall had a run at GD as well as Sandy Nyok running around all over the court at GK, GA and WD. I am a true believer in that as much as we need goals to win, and both Olivia Kerr and Julia Lamonica were fantastic tonight, we need a great defence and mid court to not only turn the ball over, which Hayley Faulwetter and Kahla Findlay were able to do time and time again, but Jasmine Evans and Em Allwell combined well through the Centre to deliver the ball in to the circle. Overall I was very impressed with the way we were able to bounce back after last week's 'flat' performance. As i said last week, maybe that was a bit of a glitch and we are now hitting our straps and back in the running! Well done.
