With just 3 rounds remaining in the regular season the Bycroft Cup is really starting to heat up now.

The 15th round of competition saw plenty of good football that has again had an impact on the incredibly close competition ladder.

Reigning premiers Bilambil picked up an important, upset win against the top of the table Southport Tigers.

Bilambil’s form of late hasn’t been sparkling, but a good win away from home against the competition leaders will give the men from the valley plenty of confidence heading into the finals.

The win also guarantees them a fourth placed finish and a home semi final in four weeks time.

The team they will face is still uncertain, even more so since Currumbin Eagles slumped to their third straight defeat; 30-14 at the hands of the Burleigh Bears.

Currumbin have gone from being within 1-point of first place a month ago, to being just 1-point ahead of Runaway Bay now.

Next week they travel down to Bilambil to face the Jets, but a round 17 meeting with Bay looks like it might be the match that decides 5th spot.

As for Runaway Bay they secured a 30-8 win over Tweed Coast to keep their finals hopes alive.

If they can spring an upset in the local derby against Southport next week things will be made a lot easier, but they will still need to beat Currumbin for a third time the following week to secure a finals spot.

In the final game of the weekend Tugun Seahawks defeated a spirited Cudgen 32-20.

Cudgen Hornets have been through a horrendous week after coach Craig Field was charged with murder after an incident at a Kingscliff pub last Sunday.

Strength and conditioning coach Ray Hubbard has taken over as head coach for the remainder of the year and the 12-point loss against a red-hot Tugun side was a positive outcome for the club.
