With six months to go before the commencement of the 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia, numerical entries have now been received from the 22 participating Pacific Games Associations. Over 3,000 athletes are now expected to enter the 27 sports on the Games program.
As usual, Athletics led the way with 20 countries entering, closely followed by Weightlifting with an impressive tally of 18 countries. Rounding out the top five in the 12 compulsory sports were Beach Volleyball, Golf and Tennis, all with 15 countries registering their participation. In the 15 optional sports selected for this year's Pacific Games, Boxing led the way with 13 countries registering their participation, followed by Judo and Taekwondo with 11.
The next major deadline is 60 days out from the Pacific Games, on 28 June, when all of the names of the participating athletes must be registered by their Pacific Games Association.
The Pacific Games Council thanks its member Pacific Games Associations for the hard work that went into preparing their numerical registrations, and wishes the region's athletes the best of luck as they strive for final selection over the coming months.
