BBNZ is committed to educating its athletes and support staff and officials about the positive effects of being drug-free in sport and in life.  Drug Free Sport NZ (DFSNZ) has developed a programme based on WADA's Athlete Outreach Model.  The programme provides access to information and staff in the midst of sporting events. Athletes, support staff and others can participate in activities that have been designed to engage and inform about the key aspects of anti-doping. Athletes can do the WADA Athlete Quiz and sign the DFSNZ Athlete Pledge at these events.

DFSNZ will attend two days of the 2011 BBNZ U19 and Secondary School National Championships running the WADA anti-doping quiz. The quiz involves a set of 10 questions randomly selected by the computer which athletes then answer and win a branded product. This will give DFSNZ a chance to introduce those athletes to the concept of anti-doping education and discuss their answers and possible answers around such topics as steroids, anti-doping rules and their athlete’s rights and responsibilities.

The Outreach programme is about preventing doping through effective values-based education programmes that can foster anti-doping behaviours and create a strong anti-doping culture. Participants are also given the opportunity to become a pledged athlete and join the Pure Playing Field Nation Community committing to competing clean.  They are then able to where the green, DFSNZ armband. Live feed updates will run via twitter on the games and the tournament, with comments, interviews and photos through the United by the Pledge website www.unitedbythepledge.co.nz.  A vinyl wall will be available for the athletes and support staff to sign to say they are committed to competing clean. For more information regarding FIBA Clean Game Campaign and United by the Pledge, use the BBNZ web link:  http://www.basketball.org.nz/national-teams/clean-game-campaign/.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
