FORMER OPAL TO SPEARHEAD WOMEN'S IV CAMPAIGN

The LTU Intervarsity side that will compete at the Australian University Games was announced today. 3 newcomers were added to the squad that won Bronze at the Southern University Games.

Headlining the additions is former Opals player, Jodie Datson. Datson, who represented Australia between 2003-2005 was also a member of the Olympic Squad in 2004. A WNBL player since 1993, Datson has also had stints in France and Turkey. She moved to Townsville in 2003/2004 and made the All Star 5 after averaging 13.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists. She bettered those numbers during the playoffs averaging 18.5ppg, 10rpg and 4.5apg. Datson currently plays for the Eltham Wildcats team that is currently in the midst of the Big V Championship (ABA)Grand Final Series against Sandringham Sabres.

In true Trober style Datson not only studies at La Trobe Uni but is also gainfully employed by the La Trobe University International Programs Office. The fiery floor general is sure to add scoring power and leadership to the already potent backcourt duo of Tess Feery and Loz Alexander.

At the Southern Uni Games, the women's team were considerably underdone at the forward and centre positions. That appears to have changed with the additions of LTU Big V gun, Stephanie Cortese and Jen Cameron from the Blackburn Vikings.

Cortese is no stranger to the LTU news after just finishing a stellar individual season for the Eagles. The Big V Division 1 July player of the month averaged 14.3 points and 14.1 rebounds for the season. Cortese led the league in rebounding and also had the best free throw percentage in the league, shooting 85.7% from the charity stripe.

Cameron has also had her share of inside play for Blackburn during the season. Despite limited minutes, Cameron had some impressive games including 15 points and 10 rebounds in 20 minutes against Sunbury earlier this season. Jen is sure to provide an inside presence come September.

These 3 additions give Coach Krystal Calvert some real firepower as the Eagles build their Uni Games campaign. The women will be holding several fundraising efforts in conjunction with the men's team in order to raise the $770 individual cost to compete. The players would hope that the La Trobe Uni community gets behind the team and support this great cause.
