LTU V MONASH UNI - TREVOR MARTIN TROPHY

The Eagles (2-0)are off to their best ever start to a season are aiming to make it 3 in a row this Thursday night (13th April). Standing in their way are last years champions and favourites to go back to back, Monash University (2-1).

As if the game doesn't have enough at stake, the teams will also play for the Trevor Martin Trophy. Last year Monash Uni were victorious when LTU hosted the match. This is the second year that the teams have contested the trophy and LTU are determined to take it back.

When investigating the contributions that individuals have made to the world of university basketball, one has to look no further than to the contribution made by Trevor Martin. A man passionate about university basketball, Trevor began as a player with La Trobe University in 1978 and continued his involvement with the club as player, coach and administrator before retiring as coach in 1993. At the end of his tenure at LTU he had been a part of IV championships in 1980 (against Monash Uni), 1985 and 1992 as well as runner up in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984. He was also awarded an Outstanding Service Award by the LTO Sports And Recreation Association in 1978 and 1994.

Monash University coaxed him out of retirement in 1996 where he coached them to an Intervarsity title in 1997 and Runners Up in 1998. After his 2nd retirement in 1998 he had contributed in total to 4 national titles and 5 Runners ups over 21 years.

It was with great sadness that he passed away suddenly on 8th of January 2000 at 46 years of age.

The trophy was commissioned to honour the significant contribution that Trevor made not just to the two clubs, but to the greater basketball community. The trophy is played once per season between the 2 teams, alternating home venues each year. If the teams do not play during the regular season, an alternate match will be organised.

Currently, LTU's players are on fire.
