BIG V ROUND 10 WRAP

Nikki Calvert

BIG V DIVISION 2 MEN

LTU 117 d CHELSEA 98 - SUNDAY JUNE 3, 2007 @ DAREBIN

The last times these two teams met, La Trobe had their merry way and coasted to a pretty convincing win. Second time around was pretty much the same. Chelsea came out aggresively and tried hard, however the depth and talent of LTU soon shone through and Chelsea looked gone early on. Tim Sturrock and Andrew Oliver were dominant early on, and combined with Pete Leimonitis' cameo appearance (7 points, 7 rebound 2 assists which should have been 5 had teammates not dropped sitters, in less than 7 minutes play), LTU went in to half time with a 27 point break. Chelsea came out with all pistons firing in the 3rd quarter and got the defecit back to 13 before Paul DiMarzio stepped up in one of the best individual efforts of the season, hitting 4 3 pointers in the space of 5 minutes to stave of the Chelsea challenge and reestablish the LTU lead. The lead got out to 33 points before the score settled down for a comforatble 19 point LTU victory.

STAT LINE OF THE GAME

Paul DiMarzio 25 points 5 assists 9/14 FG 4/6 3PT

Andrew Oliver 16 points 9 rebounds 6 Blocks 6/10 FG

Tim Sturrock 26 points 11 rebounds 11/22 FG

RANDOM OBSERVATIONS

  • Dean Sutton quickly put the shooting hand away when his first effort smashed into the bottom corner of the backboard. Some days you just shouldn't shoot
  • Bryn Philpott-Evans pulled a half time buzzer beater straight out of the place we all know of. Hopefully the camera caught it as it was in the furthest corner of the court on a ridiculous angle

THE WEEK AHEAD

LTU V BLACKBURN @ DAREBIN SAT 16/6 8PM

LTU go into the break in 2nd position with an 11-2 record, 3 wins ahead of 2nd and 2 win adrift of the undefeated Coburg Giants. When they come back, they face a determined Blackburn Vikings squad that have pushed the Eagles in both matches so far.

BIG V DIVISION 1 WOMEN

MILDURA 56 d LTU 52 - SUNDAY JUNE 3, 2007 @ DAREBIN

It's starting to sound like a broken record with the women's team. This time the girls were missing Captain, Krystal Calvert who reinjured her ankle in Warrnambool and the other Captain, Michelle Lee who has gone OS for the remainder of the season. The team welcomed back leading scorer and rookie, Erin Jarvis for her 2nd attempted comeback from stress fractures in the foot and once again were determined to get that elusive win.

Mildura got a slight jump on the Eagles through some accurate perimter shooting but LTU were able to keep within striking distance for the rest of the game. Alas, it was another case of almost there for the girls, this time falling 4 points short. Once again, Erin McCutcheon played against doctors orders with a strained medial ligament and dominated the boards, finishing with 17 for the game.

The girls will now use the break to give their bodies a rest and get ready to tear it up in the 2nd half of the season.

STAT LINE OF THE GAME

ERIN McCUTCHEON 12 points 17 rebounds

SHERRY GLENNIE 14 points 14 rebounds

LTU v SUNBURY @ DAREBIN SATURDAY 16/6 6PM

The last time that these two teams met, La Trobe staged the comback of the year to come back from 20 points down in the last quarter to put the game into overtime and unfortunately lose. This time, the Eagles wont let the jets get that break and will instead look to assert themselves early on in the game. With a healthy team, the Eagles are not going to let this one get away!
