LTU ENTERS NEW UNI LEAGUE BASKETBALL COMP

La Trobe University will be entering a men's and women's team in the new Uni League Basketball competition beginning in the 2nd semester. The competition is a brand new league specifically for university students and is the ideal platform for the La Trobe Intervarsity side to prepare for the Australian University Games. Matches will be held every Friday afternoon at a venue to be announced (most likely Melbourne University) between 3pm and 6pm.

Uni League Basketball has been developed by La Trobe's own Andrew Forbes who we all know lives for University Basketball. "It puts the spotlight on the students and allows them to play good quality basketball without conflicting with weekends, exams and holidays," says Forbes.

La Trobe Uni joins 5 other universities (Monash, Melbourne, RMIT, Deakin, Swinburne) in this 12 week pilot competition. Next year, Uni League will launch nationally and each university will play in a home and away format within their own state, playing for rankings that will take them to a National tournament at the end of the year. The tournament will be similar to the American NCAA tournament.

La Trobe University is currently holding tryouts and trainings for prospective team members. The team that represents La Trobe in Uni League competition will be the same one that represents La Trobe Uni at the Australian Uni Games on the Gold Coast in September this year.

Trainings are held on Monday nights from 5pm - 6pm at Darebin Stadium. Interested students should contact basketball@latrobe.edu.au to register their interest. Further information on Uni League Basketball can be found at www.unileaguebasketball.com.au
