2013 : AFL Cairns Year of Women in Footy
AFL Cairns is proud to announce that 2013 will be dedicated as the Year of Women in Footy.
Women play a vital role in AFL football in our region. As well as players in the AFLC Women’s League they play an active role in the function of our senior and junior clubs and competitions.
Critical roles such as umpires, committee members, coaches, trainers, game day helpers and supporters are held by mums, wives, girlfriends, sisters and passionate supporters. Often they are forgotten or are occasionally commended in the hurly burly of what is often incorrectly seen as a game for blokes.
Nothing could be further from the truth at the local level right through to our elite competition. Without ‘the girls’ we probably wouldn’t exist, so this year we’re dedicating our season to them.
The season will be full of significant initiatives that will continue to focus on the important contribution women make to footy. Highlights will include;
The AFL National Women’s Football Championship in June.
The AFL’s only female umpire, Chelsea Roffey, officiating at the Cairns Premiership Match.
Visitation by several well-known national female Sports Journalists, footy supporters and sporting stars.
Pink Footy Round for Women’s health issues.
Acknowledgement of our own local ‘stars’ such as;
Norma Crathern – The Grand Dame of AFL Cairns. A lifetime of involvement with Centrals and the League.
Del Lythall – Devoted long time administrator of Juniors and AFL Cape York.
Sue Dixon – Behind the scenes Club officer who gets the job done week in and week out.
Meg Pullinger – A Rising Star - Young player, umpire and passionate football follower.
Jo Butland – Renowned sportsperson who led the charge to create our Women’s League.
Melissa Dunstan – Football administrator who has lifted the professionalism of our League.
Deb Podalzak – Passionate football follower who has served juniors, seniors & umpires with distinction.
Jodi King – Devoted mum who supports the footy careers of three boys and a girl.
To launch our themed season, AFL Cairns will host the January 25th Round of the AFL C Women’s League at Cazalys Stadium under lights for the first time. The first match will commence at 6.30pm. A launch function will commence at 6pm.
A media meeting will be held at 5.30pm in the Cazalys Stadium Grandstand to meet with the Club Captains and Coaches and League representatives.
