Courage under fire as undermanned, outgunned Cutters show plenty of spirit.
North Cairns have set themselves on a grand final trajectory in the AFL Cairns Women's League after a 139 point drubbing of the South Cairns Cutters on Saturday. The Tigers ran riot in the round 11 clash at Crathern Park, posting their biggest win of the season to score 22.14-146 against South Cairns 1.1-7. The Cutters, who managed one goal in the final quarter via Natalie Fowler, were severley undermanned with only 14 players on the field. As a result, the Tigers also reduced their numbers to make it an even game. "I expected that sort of beating," Cutters coach Michael Douglas said. "The girls that did play, they fought it out all day. "I had to change our tactics and play a pretty defensive style of football." Despite the heavy loss, Douglas remained confident of snatching a win before the end of the season. "As long as I hve my full side together, I'm confident that I will be able to knock a side off, but it's just a matter of getting everyone there on the day." Tigers coach Jo Butland said it was "demoralising" to play against an under-strength side, which saw forward Maddie Peeters bag eight goals, alone, in the first quarter. "It was a good opportunity to give all of the girls a run in some very different positions," Butland said. "In the second, third and fourth quarter, they (South Cairns) just came out and flooded our forward line, so our greatest scoring quarter was that first quarter." Meanwhile, the Manunda Hawks proved too strong for Centrals Trinity Beach, upsetting their mid-table rivals in a 12.7-79 to 4.1-25 victory. The last match of the regular season will end with round 12 this weekend, followed by a finals series where all four teams in the AFLCWL participate.
